Zareen, Borgohain headline Indian women’s team for Commonwealth Games
Reigning world champion Nikhat Zareen and Tokyo Olympics bronze medalist Lovlina Borgohain came out victorious in the Indian National Women Selection Trials for the upcoming Commonwealth Games 2022 held recently at the Indira Gandhi Stadium in New Delhi.
Zareen, who copped the gold medal in the flyweight (52kg) division of the IBA Women’s World Championships 2022 in Istanbul, Turkey last month, needed to move down to light flyweight (50kg) but still trounced Minakshi of Haryana.
On the other hand, two-time World Championships bronze finisher Borgohain came through with a lopsided victory over Pooja of Railways in the light middleweight (70kg) division.
Two other boxers in Nitu Ghanghas and Jaismine Lamboria completed the four-strong team of India for the women’s boxing competition in the Commonwealth Games slated to start in Birmingham, England on July 28.
Former two-time youth world titlist Ghanghas won via split decision against World Championships 2019 silver finisher Manju Rani in minimumweight (48kg) while national squad rookie Lamboria stunned recent world bronze winner Parveen Hooda in lightweight (60kg).
Earlier this month, the Boxing Federation of India conducted the selection trials for elite men pugilists with defending Asian Games champion Amit Panghal and five-time Asian Championships medalist Shiva Thapa spearheading the eight-man team.
