World Champions as Nikhat Zareen and Lovlina Borgohain will lead the Indian Women’s Team at the Asian Games

The management of the Boxing Federation of India selected its women’s national team for the upcoming Asian Games which will be taking place in Hangzhou, China from September 23. India’s top stars such as their World Champions, Nikhat Zareen and Lovlina Borgohain will be the spearhead of the women’s team in Hangzhou.

India hosted the recent edition of the Women’s World Boxing Championships in New Delhi this March where their boxers topped the team standings with their four gold medals. Among their four gold medallists, two of them have been selected to participate for the Olympic quotas at the Asian Games.

Nikhat Zareen won the recent two editions of the Women’s World Boxing Championships and she was also unstoppable at the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games. She is unbeaten since many boxing events and she has huge potential to take one of the Olympic spots at the flyweight (50kg) in Hangzhou.

Preeti claimed a silver medal at the 2021 ASBC Asian Youth Boxing Championships in Dubai and she was able to join the elite national team at the 2023 Women’s World Boxing Championships. The 20-year-old bantamweight (54kg) boxer is a big puncher and her strength could be the key in her actions at the Games.

Parveen Hooda earned a bronze medal at the light welterweight (63kg) in the 2022 Women’s World Boxing Championships and she tried to qualify at the welterweight (66kg) first. The 23-year-old boxer decided to move down to the featherweight (57kg) and she succeeded in the selections which means she will be the tallest boxer in the category at the Games.

Jaismine Lamboria represented India at the 2019 ASBC Asian Youth Boxing Championships in Ulaanbaatar and she developed rapidly in the recent years to be the best in the country at the lightweight (60kg). Arundhati Choudhary earned several ASBC medals during her career and the 21-year-old boxer will receive the right to compete in a major elite championship for the very first time.

Lovlina Borgohain is India’s next top boxer who moved up to the middleweight (75kg) following her bronze medal at the Tokyo Olympic Games. She earned mostly bronze medals in the top events in her previous weight class, but she is the reigning ASBC Asian Champion and Women’s World Champion in this new category.
