Vietnam’s Nguyen Thi Tam guns for second Asian elite gold
National star Nguyen Thi Tam will aim for a second continental title as she banners Vietnam in the ASBC Asian Elite Championships 2022 set on October 30 to November 13 in Amman, Jordan.
Nguyen Thi Tam emerged as the first Vietnamese pugilist to seize a gold medal on Asian elite women’s level when the country hosted the tournament in Ho Chi Minh City back in 2017.
The 28-year-old fighter is also an Asian silver finisher in 2019, a two-time defending Southeast Asian Games titlist and a Tokyo Olympics campaigner.
She will look to reclaim the throne in the women’s flyweight (52kg) division against the reigning Asian champion Nazym Kyzaibay of Kazakhstan and other rivals.
Meanwhile, another strong Vietnamese bet in Nguyen Thi Huong will also compete in Amman after moving back to her pet women’s light heavyweight (81kg) class.
Nguyen Thi Huong nabbed a bronze medal in the AIBA Women’s World Championships and Asian Elite Championships in 2019. She also won a silver in the Asian meet in 2017.
The 25-year-old boxer is coming off successful stints in national events albeit competing in the middleweight (75kg) category.
