Vietnam’s best boxers as Nguyen Van Duong and Truong Dinh Hoang dominated their finals at the National Championships

The eleven male final contests were also held in the last competition day at the Vietnam Boxing Federation’s Elite National Championships in Bac Ninh province. Tokyo Olympian Nguyen Van Duong and Southeast Asian Games winner Truong Dinh Hoang dominated their finals in the event while Tran Duc Tho defeated veteran Nguyen Van Hai.

Vietnam Boxing Federation hosted their National Cup for the elite boxers earlier and the country continued its activities for them. Women or men boxers who were born between 1980 and 2001 were eligible to attend in the National Championships. The President of the Vietnam Boxing Federation Mr. Tran Minh Tien opened the Elite National Boxing Championships and followed all of the contests in Bac Ninh Province.

The competition was also a selection for the elite boxers before the World Olympic Boxing Qualifying Event which will be held on June 2021. Vietnam achieved its first male quota place in the Asian & Oceanian Olympic Boxing Qualifying Event where Nguyen Van Duong achieved bronze medal and qualified for the Tokyo Olympics. Vietnam’s best boxer ASBC Asian Women’s Champion Nguyen Thi Tam did not qualify for the Games yet.

Altogether 62 female and 88 male boxers attended for the medals in the Vietnam Elite National Championships in Bac Ninh province. Among the men boxers surprisingly the super heavyweight (+91kg) was the most crowded with 12 entries after the general weigh-in.

Le Huu Toan had a tough battle against Ho Chi Minh City’s Sam Minh Phat but he had a great final round to get the title of the pinweight (46kg) in the first final of the Vietnam Men’s Elite National Championships. ASBC Asian Youth Boxing Championships competitor 20-year-old Nguyen Linh Phung dominated his final at the light flyweight (49kg) and defeated Tat Hoang Thanh of Ho Chi Minh City.

Vietnam’s national team member at the flyweight (52kg), Bui Trong Thai competed already in the World Military Games, in the ASBC Asian Elite Boxing Championships and two editions of the Southeast Asian Games therefore he had enough experiences to beat a younger rival, Bui Cong Danh Loi in the final.

 Nguyen Van Duong is Vietnam’s lone Tokyo Olympian who caused one of the main sensations at the Asian & Oceanian Olympic Boxing Qualifying Event in Amman where he claimed bronze medal. The bantamweight (56kg) boxer defended his national throne following his success over Ngo Tuan Anh.

Experienced international boxer, Nguyen Van Gioi succeeded the lightweight (60kg) where he defeated Pham Duc Doan in the final. One of the best finals have been realized at the light welterweight (64kg) where experienced international boxers as Nguyen Van Chung and Vu Thanh Dat met for the gold medal. Vu exceeded the previous expectations and defeated his rival in one of the best title contests of the final day.

Vietnam’s veteran and most experienced male boxer, two-times Southeast Asian Games silver medallist veteran Nguyen Van Hai moved up to the welterweight (69kg) in the recent weeks. The 32-year-old boxer dominated his contests during his road to the finals but he suffered a loss to another international level hope, Tran Duc Tho.

The title of the middleweight (75kg) was taken by Bui Phuoc Tung who had a narrow success over Vu Thanh Trung. Vietnam’s Southeast Asian Games winner Truong Dinh Hoang is still aiming for a spot for the Tokyo Olympic Games. The 30-year-old boxer moved up to the light heavyweight (81kg), and following his KO success in the semi-finals, he spent also short time in the ring at the finals against Bui Ngoc Phuong.
