Veteran Ian Clark Bautista leads Team Philippines in the upcoming ASBC Asian Elite Boxing Championships

The Philippines is one of the boxing powers in the Southeast Asian region and the country will be aiming for new medals in the upcoming ASBC Asian Elite Men and Women Boxing Championships in Chiang Mai, Thailand.

The Philippines earned two bronze medals in the Paris Olympic Games but both of their girls, Aira Villegas and Nesthy Petecio are still not in that condition to participate in the ASBC Asian Elite Boxing Championships.

The Filipinos selected more than 40 boxers to their national pool two months ago and among them two females and eight male pugilists will be participating in the upcoming exciting championships in Chiang Mai, North Thailand.

The Filipinos earned one gold and two bronze medals in the last edition of the ASBC Asian Elite Boxing Championships in Amman, Jordan two years ago therefore their target is to repeat that performance.

One of their new national team members, Ofelia Magno will represent Team Philippines at the women’s minimumweight (48kg) in Chiang Mai. The Thailand Open International Tournament winner 31-year-old Riza Pasuit moved down to the featherweight (57kg) and she will be the team’s second female boxer in the event.

The Philippines has fantastic boxing history at the men’s minimumweight (48kg) and their ASBC Asian U22 bronze medallist 19-year-old Jay Bryan Baricuatro could be their next hero in the smallest division. Marvin Tabamo competed for the Philippines in several events in 2019 and after a short break, the hard-working boxer returned to the national team.

The two-time ASBC Asian U22 Boxing Championships medallist Flint Jara will represent the strong country at the men’s bantamweight (54kg) with podium dreams. One of the veterans in the men’s team, the SEA Games winner 30-year-old Ian Clark Bautista earned his Asian youth title still back in 2013 and he has the power to make surprises in Chiang Mai.

Their new lightweight (60kg) boxer, Mervin Lucky Alcober won his first national event in 2019 and he competed for the Philippines in the U22 level during his career. The 20-year-old Mark Ashley Fajardo is one of the biggest punchers at the light welterweight (63.5kg), many of his contests were ended by KO in the recent two years.

Brandon Soriano is their new welterweight (67kg) boxer in the national team who will be making his international debut in Chiang Mai. Tyler Tanap was quarter-finalist at the Ulaanbaatar Boxing Cup in September and he has the next chance to prove his very best at the light middleweight (71kg).
