Twelve gold medallists at the Bhutan Youth-Junior-Schoolboys-Schoolgirls National Championships

The Bhutan Boxing Federation arranged its first national event this year for their youth, junior, schoolgirls and schoolboys talents. Twelve boxers, including four girls, celebrated their gold medals in the annual Bhutan Youth-Junior-Schoolgirls-Schoolboys National Championships.

A pre-training camp was held before the National Championships for their talents to support the final preparation. Bhutan has a new boxing training centre, which was built in the previous months, and that facility will be a start of a new era.

Bhutan sent boxers to the previous ASBC Asian Boxing Championships after their long lockdowns and the country returned to the international events in 2022. Bhutan is planning to participate in the upcoming ASBC Asian Youth & Junior Boxing Championships and send their best talents to Kazakhstan.

Bhutan invested resources to develop women’s boxing in the country to find the best talents in all of the regions. Jigme Seldon was the first female winner in the National Championships, she defeated Tashi Chiden in the lone schoolgirl final.

Lekey Wangmo defeated Sangay Peldon at the women’s junior flyweight (50kg), while Nima Wangmo and Norbu Dema earned their gold medals in the youth age group. Nima Wangmo competed successfully at the 2019 National Championships and after four years of experience, she was able to dominate her final against Reshika Rai.

Tshering Dorji (35kg) and Tshering Tashi (40kg) won the schoolboys’ weight classes in the National Championships. Three talented boys such as Pema Namdrel (46kg), Rigyel Phuntsho (48kg) and Jamdel Chodrup (57kg) defeated their opponents in the junior level of boxing and they are aiming spots in the national team.

A 2019 Sub-Junior Champion, Kinley Phuntsho was too smart for Jigme Wangchuk in the youth flyweight (51kg) final and earned the first title in that age group. Karma Wangchuk triumphed over Karma Phuntsho at the youth featherweight (57kg) before a former National Champion Dechen Dorji subdued Kartma Namkhai Norbu at the lightweight (60kg) final.
