Twelve Asian male boxers advanced to the semi-finals in the Boxam Tournament

The men’s quarter-finals were held in the third competition day of the 35th Boxam Tournament in Castellon de la Plana, Spain. Six boxers from India and also half dozens of athletes from Kazakhstan advanced to the semi-finals in the Boxam Tournament which delivered excellent contests on Day3.

India and Kazakhstan sent their top line-ups to the competition where such strong nations as Russia, United States, Ecuador, Italy, France, Spain, Puerto Rico, Panama, Lithuania and Romania are also in the Boxam Tournament. Castellon de la Plana is the host of the strong international event once again which is located in the Valencia region.

India’s Asian Games winner and ASBC Asian Champion Amit Panghal had a fantastic battle against Spain’s European Games gold medallist Gabriel Escobar which could be an Olympic final in Tokyo. The Indian flyweight (52kg) boxer opened the first round better but from the end of the period he received counter-punches from longer distance and suffered a narrow loss to Escobar in Castellon de la Plana.

Kazakhstan’s two-time ASBC Asian Youth Champion Makhmud Sabyrkhan is only 19 but he has the confidence and the experience to dominate his contests against much older rivals. The Kazakh teenager felt the tempo and he worked from his best fighting range against Spain’s WSB boxer Martin Molina in the quarter-finals of the flyweight (52kg). His Spanish opponent worked well in the second round and kept Sabyrkhan busy until the final gong but the Kazakh teenager could win that contest.

India’s Commonwealth Games bronze medallist Mohamed Hussamuddin overcame Italy’s Simone Spada in the attacks and his perfect timing and won their contest by unanimous decision. Kazakhstan’s ASBC Asian Youth Champion Serik Temirzhanov is a Rio Olympian at the featherweight (57kg) who met with United States’ Bruce Carrington in another strong battle. The Pavlodar-based Kazakh boxer had a good game strategy against the US hope and advanced to the semi-finals.

Kazakhstan’s two-time ASBC Asian Boxing Championships silver medallist Zakir Safiullin moved forward more than in his last contests but stepped into India’s Manish Kaushik’s punching range. The Kazakh veteran has done tactical mistakes in the bout and Kaushik used them up to land successful counter-punches. The Indian delivered one of his best performances in the quarter-final of the lightweight (63kg) against such top boxer as Safiullin and joined to the last four in Castellon de la Plana.

India’s Asian Games winner Vikas Krishan Yadav moved back to the welterweight (69kg) in 2019 and his efforts paid off when he qualified for the Tokyo Olympic Games. The Indian boxer eliminated Italy’s London 2012 Olympics bronze medallist Vincenzo Mangiacapre using his perfect timing to land punches. Kazakhstan’s two-time AIBA World Boxing Championships bronze medallist Ablaikhan Zhussupov played with Spain’s 18-year-old Sergio Martinez and dominated all parts of the contest.

India’s ASBC Asian Boxing Championships silver medallist Ashish Kumar delivered a great first round against Italy’s Remo Salvati in their middleweight (75kg) quarter-final. The experienced Indian, who is already a Tokyo Olympian, felt the distance better than his European opponent and advanced to the semi-finals. His fellow, London 2012 Olympian Sumit Sangwan was too smart for Belgium’s Ziad El Mohor and advanced to the semi-finals of the light heavyweight (81kg).

Kazakhstan’s defending AIBA World Champion at the light heavyweight (81kg) Bekzad Nurdauletov started his preparation for the Olympic Games and demonstrated his power against Morocco’s Mohamed Assaghir. Kazakhstan’s next star in action was Rio 2016 Olympic Games silver medallist Vasiliy Levit who was too strong for France’s Seydi Coupe in the quarter-final of the heavyweight (91kg). Kazakhstan’s last triumph in the third competition day was taken by Nurlan Saparbay at the super heavyweight (+91kg).
