The Vietnam Elite & Youth National Championships began with the participation of 335 boxers in Can Tho

The Vietnam Elite & Youth National Championships is underway in the city of Can Tho which is their next selection competition for the later main international championships.

The 2006 and 2007 born boxers are eligible to participate in the youth part of the national competition and the older athletes are able to compete among the elites.

The Vietnam Elite & Youth National Championships is running in two rings due to the high number of participants in Can Tho. The number of the women’s youth boxers is 66 in the national event, the women’s elites is 84, the men’s youth is 63 and 122 men elite athletes are competing for the gold medals.

The women’s youth boxers began their campaigns in the second day of the National Championships where Luc Thao Thanh won the tightest contest at the flyweight (52kg). Hoang Ngoc Phuong Trinh and Le Thi Thanh Hoan defeated their first rivals in the smallest category at the pinweight (45kg).

Hanoi’s star, the two-time Asian Champion Nguyen Thi Tam recovered from her serious injury and the Tokyo Olympian started her road to the gold medal with a clear success, a stoppage against Tran Thi My Le at the women’s elite light flyweight (50kg).

Their Paris Olympian female boxer, Vo Thi Kim Anh, the Thailand Open Tournament winner walked over to the next stage of boxing following her opponent, Nguyen Thi Yen was unable to box against her at the elite bantamweight (54kg).

Dinh Van Sai of Da Nang won the closest contests of the day, he had to work hard until the last seconds to beat Duong Xuan Trong at the men’s elite pinweight (46kg). Nguyen Linh Phung (48kg), Bui Duc Loc (54kg) and Doan Gia Thanh (57kg) also succeeded in the men’s elite part of the competition.

The men’s elite lightweight (60kg) is the most popular category in the National Championships with the participation of 14 boxers. Nguyen Van Teo, Tran Van Hoai Thuong, Do Ngoc Hoan, the national team member Bui Trong Thai, Ngo Tuan Anh and Nguyen Duy Anh won the preliminary contests in this weight class.
