The Nepal National Selection Tournament for Amman started in Lalitpur

The management of Nepal Boxing arranged a National Selection Tournament for the upcoming ASBC Asian Women’s & Men’s Elite Boxing Championships which will be starting in Amman, Jordan on November 28.

Nepal hosted the Bir Ghaneshman Singh National Championships, the Inter-Provincial Championships and the Prakash Dahal Memorial Championships this year but only the National Selection Tournament can guarantee the tickets to Amman.

The Nepal National Selection Tournament is underway in the city of Lalitpur, which is famous for its ancient monuments, and it is located in the south-central part of the Kathmandu Valley at the altitude of 1,400 meters.

The women’s minimumweight (48kg) is always one of the strongest categories in Nepal where one of the favourites lost her opener in Lalitpur. Ramisha Shrestha progressed a lot in the recent one year but she suffered an unexpected loss to Aarati Bomjan in a bout which was a 3:2 split decision.

H2O Athletics’ Manisha Rai used her smart style of boxing in the second women’s minimumweight (48kg) bout and she eliminated Mandira Paudel, winning all of the three rounds in each judges’ scorecards. Narika Rai won the third female contest of the first session in Lalitpur, the featherweight (57kg) boxer eliminated Tanuja Nepali in the selection event.

The men’s flyweight (51kg) is another key category in Nepal and Nawaraj Shahi won the first bout against Kamal Thapa Magar in this category. The final verdict was unanimous decision in the opening bout of the men’s competition in Lalitpur.

Four contests were held at the men’s lightweight (60kg) in Lalitpur where one of the local boys, Bal Bahadur Pun made a strong comeback after the first round. His opponent, Ram Bahadur Thapa had the advantage in each scorecard after one round but Pun’s heavy shots were decisive in the second.

Khagendra Rokka Magar eliminated an international boxer, the former Asian Games competitor Bikram Pariyar at the busy lightweight (60kg) and he remained his chance alive to earn a flight ticket to Amman. Aayush Shrestha and Samar Lama were the further winners in this weight class in the first day of boxing.

Bikash Rama is another local boxer from Lalitpur who won his first contest, he eliminated Tarzan Gharti Magar at the light middleweight (71kg). Suman Karki, who competed in the national events in the recent years, became the second winner in this category following his success over Ayun Shrestha.
