The National Games in Nepal will start on May 17

Nepal’s most important local competition, the 10th National Games will be held in Surkhet, Karnali province on May 17-24.

According to the National Sports Council Press Meeting, the women’s boxers can compete from the minimumweight (48kg) up to the middleweight (75kg) in the National Games. The men’s boxers are able to participate in all of their 13 divisions from the minimumweight (48kg) up to the super heavyweight (+92kg).

The first edition of the National Games was held in 1982 in Nepal with the number of 1543 competitors in 16 sports. The size of the National Games significantly increased in the recent decades and currently there are 36 sports in the official program and the number of the athletes could be more than 6,000 in Surkhet.

Boxing is one of the core sports in Nepal and it has been hosted in all of the previous National Games since 1982. Archery, arm wrestling, athletics, badminton, bodybuilding, boxing, chess, cricket, football, gymnastics, handball, kabaddi, swimming, table tennis, volleyball, and weightlifting are the only sports which were on the program in all of the editions.

Next to the provinces in Nepal, teams from the Army and Police also have the right to participate in the National Games.

Nepal hosted the 2019 edition of the South Asian Games which was a strong commitment and promotion for boxing. Nepal could send maximum number of 13 boxers to the 2023 Asian Games for the very first time.

Nepal had several strong results especially in women’s boxing in the previous years, they had new milestones in the ASBC Asian U22 Boxing Championships and the Women’s World Boxing Championships.
