The Layton Cup started in Sri Lanka’s capital with 12 bouts

The Layton Cup Boxing Tournament is one of the traditional competitions in Sri Lanka and has opened with its first session in the Royal MAS Arena in Colombo.

The first competition day saw 12 bouts in the Layton Cup where the number of the participating boxers is nearly 150. Boxers from the Navy, Army, Air Force, Police and several boxing clubs from all over the country are participating in the Layton Cup.

The venue of the finals of the Layton Cup will be held in the Negombo Beach this week not so far from their capital city, Colombo. The Boxing Association of Sri Lanka plans to increase the popularity of the sport in their homeland with these kind of marketing actions.

Sri Lanka sent record number of boxers to the recent ASBC Asian Junior & Schoolboys & Schoolgirls Boxing Championships and the country achieved one bronze medal in Al Ain, United Arab Emirates.

The newly elected President of Sri Lanka Boxing Mr. Anuruddha Shanaka Bandara is a very active official and he has strong strategic plans to develop the sport in the South Asian country until 2028.

Mr. Bandara watched the first competition day in Colombo where the Layton Cup is one of the selection tournaments for the upcoming international events such as the ASBC Asian Elite Boxing Championships.

One of the most decorated Sri Lankan female boxers, Ishara Thushari Perera outpointed M.D.K. Devindi in the first round at the women’s light flyweight (50kg) in Colombo. G.W.G.C. Tharuka (57kg) and J.A.S.I. Jayasinghe (+81kg) were the further female winners of the first competition day in the Layton Cup.

The minimumweight (48kg) is always one of the strongest categories in Sri Lanka’s boxing and the first winner of the Layton Cup was Dharmaraja College’s T.H.N Jinadasa who had a 4:1 split decision success against G.K.G.W.U. Kumara today.

Sri Lanka’s new sensation, Umayanga Mihiran won two important bouts in the 2nd World Olympic Boxing Qualifying Event in Bangkok and he was near to qualify for the Paris Olympics. The 21-year-old talent is the favourite of the men’s flyweight (51kg) again but he did not compete in the first day in Colombo but S.I. Ranmal impressed in this category.
