The Great Silk Way Tournament starts today and Uzbekistan’s No.1, Bakhodir Jalolov is also in Baku

The Great Silk Way Tournament starts today where 16 women and 105 men boxers compete for the 18 gold medals in Baku, Azerbaijan. Twenty-two bouts are scheduled in the first session of the strong Great Silk Way Tournament today.

The host of the competition is the Azerbaijan Boxing Federation which organized such huge events in the recent 15 years such as the World Men’s Elite Boxing Championships, the Youth World Boxing Championships and the European Games as well.

Host Azerbaijan, Hungary, Iran, Italy, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Pakistan, Poland, Russia, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan are the participating eleven countries in the Great Silk Way Tournament in Baku. The competition is a preparation event for the upcoming 2nd World Olympic Boxing Qualifying Event which will be starting in Bangkok, Thailand on May 23.

The host team will compete with their best line-ups including Umud Rustamov (57kg), the former World Champion Javid Chalabiyev (63.5kg), the Paris Olympian Murad Allakhverdiyev (86kg), the 2021 World Champion Loren Berto Alfonso (92kg) and Mahammad Abdullayev (+92kg) in the team.

The Uzbeks selected a powerful team to the Great Silk Way Tournament with several Asian U22 and Asian Youth Champions. The biggest name in the team is the Olympic Games winner, World Champion and Asian Games gold medallist Bakhodir Jalolov (+92kg) but the two-time Asian Champion Saidjamshid Jafarov (75kg) is also in Baku.

Kazakhstan’s 2021 World Champion at the minimumweight (48kg), Temirtas Zhussupov is one of the favourites in the smallest weight class in Baku. The veteran Kazakh will turn 36 this year but he is still active, speedy and energetic in his international bouts.

Kyrgyzstan’s Anvarzhan Khodzhiyev is also on the board of the minimumweight (48kg), he achieved the title at the Strandja Memorial Tournament last month. His Asian Youth Champion teammate, Almaz Orozbekov will compete at the welterweight (67kg) in this Great Silk Way Tournament.

Kazakhstan’s next star in their participating team is Serik Temirzhanov, the Tokyo Olympian who claimed a silver medal at the 2021 World Boxing Championships. The Pavlodar-based boxer moved up to the light welterweight (63.5kg) in the recent months and he adopted the physical skills of the category very quickly.

Kazakhstan’s Sagyndyk Togambay earned a bronze medal at the 2023 Asian Games and he will be one of the stars of the heavyweight (92kg) in Baku. His teammate, the multiple World and Asian silver medallist Kamshybek Kunkabayev has already qualified for the Paris Olympics and the super heavyweight (+92kg) veteran will use the Great Silk Way Tournament as preparation for the Games.
