The best ever start for Afghanistan in a major championship

Afghanistan made an excellent start at the IBA Youth World Boxing Championships in Budva, Montenegro where their next youngster, Samir Hamdam also won his preliminary bout.

Afghanistan, China, DPR Korea, Hong Kong, Iran, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Nepal, Palestine, Pakistan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan are the participating 13 Asian nations in the IBA Youth World Boxing Championships.

Altogether 73 nations and 593 boxers are participating in the IBA Youth World Boxing Championships in Budva which makes the event the biggest competition of the globe this year.

Two Asians won the opening bouts in the third competition day in Budva, Tajikistan’s Meroj Sufijonov and Uzbekistan’s Abdulaziz Abdunazarov both succeeded at the Round of 32 of the men’s flyweight (51kg). Sufijonov eliminated a Venezuelan opponent, Wilmer Solorzano while the Uzbek was too smart for China’s promising Song Bowen.

Iran sent a smaller delegation to Budva but their Mehdi Kazemi landed a perfect first punch against North Macedonia’s Bajram Mamutovski. The referee counted his opponent in the fifth second and Kazemi increased his rhythm once again in the middle period of the bout to dominate his flyweight (51kg) preliminary challenge.

Kyrgyzstan’s Momunaly Ybyraimankunov lost to their star Zafarbek Kamilov in most of his national events closely but finally he received the flight ticket for a huge championship. The referee counted him in the first round but the 18-year-old Kyrgyz boy made a huge return in the second to turn back their flyweight (51kg) contest.

China’s Zhang Haosheng is a new addition to their youth national team but he found the best angles to land his punches against Kyrgyzstan’s Ramzan Kadyrov at the welterweight (67kg) preliminary. The Chinese boxer controlled this contest from the first seconds and another Asian, Kazakhstan’s four-time Asian Champion Torekhan Sabyrkhan also marched to the last 16 in this weight class.

Afghanistan made a great start in the IBA Youth World Boxing Championships on Day1 and their Samir Hamdam exceeded all of the expectations today. The welterweight (67kg) talent lives in Germany and he met in a unique contest with a German boxer, Nick Smirnov but Hamdam managed to win that preliminary using the good strategy.

Tajikistan’s Ruslan Gafurov claimed a bronze medal already at the 2019 ASBC Asian Schoolboys Boxing Championships in Kuwait City at the age of 13 and after five years of international experience, he is one of their youth stars. Gafurov kept his Kazakh opponent, Akhmet Ussen on long in most of their contests, and he eliminated another medal contender at the light welterweight (63.5kg).

Kazakhstan’s ASBC Asian Youth Champion Madiyar Beksultanov and Uzbekistan’s Javokhir Mekhriddinov gave in everything from the first seconds and their rhythm was a final level bout in the afternoon session. Beksultanov defeated the Uzbek once in Astana this May but Mekhriddinov had the strong motivation to make a well-deserved revenge in their light heavyweight (80kg) bout.

Kyrgyzstan’s Asian Youth silver medallist Mukhammadaziz Zakirov is a relatively small boxer at the men’s light heavyweight (80kg) but he has an aggressive style of boxing. The Kyrgyz boy put Lithuania’s Martin Moisejenko under big pressure and after the standing counts, the referee stopped their contest.

Kazakhstan’s Aslan Yeldibayuly not only received the right to compete at the super heavyweight (+92kg) in Budva but he knocked out his Chinese opponent, Zhang Da. Kyrgyzstan’s Myrzakir Koshaliyev was the next Asian winner in the heaviest weight class, he eliminated Bosnia & Herzegovina’s Asaf Pozder.
