The Asian Games opens with 21 top bouts on Day1
The boxing event of the Asian Games will start tomorrow with 21 contests in Hangzhou, China on September 24. All of the sessions in the upcoming days will begin at 14:00 and 19:00 in the Asian Games and several final-level contests are scheduled already in the first competition day.
The number of the female boxers is 89 in six weight categories in this Asian Games which is absolute record in the event’s history. There are 149 male boxers in seven weight classes which means the average number of athletes per division is more than 21.
There are 20 females and 14 available male quotas in the Asian Games for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games and all of the top nations can expect strong concurrency in this fantastic event. There are 39 countries which are participating in the boxing event of the Asian Games and this is another record in the continent’s boxing life.
Afghanistan, Bahrain, Bangladesh, Bhutan, China, DPR Korea, Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, Iran, Iraq, Japan, Jordan, Kazakhstan, South Korea, Kuwait, Kyrgyzstan, Laos, Macau, Malaysia, Mongolia, Nepal, Pakistan, Palestine, Philippines, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Singapore, Sri Lanka, Syria, Chinese Taipei, Tajikistan, Thailand, Timor Leste, Turkmenistan, United Arab Emirates, Uzbekistan, Vietnam and Yemen are the competing nations in boxing.
Two experienced girls, Mongolia’s Yesugen Oyuntsetseg and Philippines’ Aira Villegas will open the entire Asian Games at the women’s light flyweight (50kg). The Mongolian moved down two categories in the recent one year but the 22-year-old talent is in top shape.
Chinese Taipei’s World Champion and Tokyo Olympics bronze medallist Huang Hsiao Wen will meet Mongolia’s World Championships medallist Enkhjargal Munguntsetseg in the next exciting bout at the women’s bantamweight (54kg).
The top women’s bantamweight (54kg) contest in the first session will be held between China’s 2018 Asian Games winner Chang Yuan and Thailand’s World Championships silver medallist star, Jutamas Jitpong.
Chinese Taipei’s Rio Olympian Lai Chu En finally earned his first ASBC medal, a bronze in the last championships in Amman and he starts the men’s competition against Laos’ US-based veteran Walter Sarnoi Oupathana at the light welterweight (63.5kg).
India’s two-time World Champion Nikhat Zareen and Vietnam’s double Asian Champion Nguyen Thi Tam opens the evening session on Day1 which is the most anticipated contests of the preliminary stage.
DPR Korea’s former World Champion Pang Chol Mi returns to the international events after four years of break and she will now meet South Korea’s Tokyo Olympian Im Ae Ji in the first preliminary round of the women’s bantamweight (54kg).
Kazakhstan’s new addition to the national team, Yertugan Zeinullinov will face Jordan’s experienced ASBC medallist Obada Al-Kasbeh in the opener of the men’s light welterweight (63.5kg). Mongolia’s ASBC Asian Champion Chinzorig Baatarsukh can expect also a hard battle against Turkmenistan’s Hursand Imankuliyev on Day1.
