The whole ASBC management wishes Happy Sinhalese and Tamil New Year day for the South Asian boxing family which may bring prosperity, health, successes, excellent sport results and happiness to all of our stakeholders.
The Sinhalese New Year, generally known as the Aluth Awurudda is the Sri Lankan holiday that celebrates the traditional New Year of the people in the country. It is generally celebrated on April 13 and 14 and begins at the sighting of the new moon and contains cultural games, prayers and family meals together.
Following the New Year’s eve celebrations, most of the businesses and shops are closed for about a week due families come together to celebrate the festive season. It also marks the sun transition to a new phase, and the end of the spring’s harvest season.
The Sri Lankans returned to the celebrations after a short break following the most difficult parts of the Covid-19 pandemic in April 22.
The current President of the Boxing Association of Sri Lanka Mr. Anuruddha Shanaka Bandara arranged the recent national competitions in the highest level with a great 1-star Referee & Judge Course as well.
The former President of the Boxing Association of Sri Lanka Mr. Dian Gomes is member of IBA Board of Directors and during his leadership, the country earned three historic bronze medals at the 2018 Commonwealth Games in Gold Coast.
Sri Lanka will host the next edition of the ASBC Asian U22 & Youth Boxing Championships in Colombo from May 10 which will include also an ITO Course and other activities.
The Sri Lankans earned a historic medal at the 2024 ASBC Asian Elite Boxing Championships in Chiang Mai where Umayanga Mihiran bagged a bronze after a hiatus but their new talents are ready for the next medal hunts.
