The 97th Sri Lankan National Championships will begin at the picturesque Galle Face Green tomorrow
The Uzbekistan Elite National Championships and the Penang Pesta International Tournament are running but another competition will join them, the Sri Lankan Elite National Championships from tomorrow.
The Sri Lankan National Championships is one of the oldest competitions in the entire Asian continent, it will be the 97th edition in the South Asian country. The event will be starting with its first competition day at the ocean-side urban park, called Galle Face Green in Colombo tomorrow.
The Sri Lankan National Championships will be organised by the Tri Forces and Police and endorsed by the Sri Lanka Tourism Bureau, promises to be more than just a competition, it is a celebration of sports tourism and a further step to promote boxing in the island.
More than 100 elite boxers are planning to participate in the Sri Lankan National Boxing Championships and the Army, the Navy, the Air Force and the Police teams could be the bests in the competition.
Sri Lanka has finally earned a bronze medal at the ASBC Asian Elite Boxing Championships in Chiang Mai, Thailand last December. Their Godakandalage Pasindu Umayanga Mihiran brought back to Sri Lanka to the boxing map and the flyweight (51kg) boxer could be a star in the Nationals.
The Best Boxer from the recent Clifford Cup, Suranga Fernando, the Best Boxer from the Layton Cup, Hasitha Jinadasa and the Commonwealth Games quarter-finalist Podi Arachchige Rukmal Prasanna could be the further boxers in the men’s part of the competition who need to be watched.
The Best Female Boxer of the Clifford Cup, Sachini Fernando from the Vidyarathna SC, the veteran Keshani Hansika, another experienced National Champion, Sajeewani Cooray, Nishadi Malshani and Sanduni Priyadarshani are the top women boxers in Sri Lanka.
“This championship is a significant milestone for Sri Lankan boxing. It is not only a showcase of our country’s boxing talent but also a launchpad for our ambitious ‘Road to LA28’ project.
Galle Face Green, with its stunning backdrop of the Arabian Sea, will be transformed into a pristine boxing arena. Giant LED screens will bring the action to life for fans in Colombo, making this an unforgettable experience.
This event is about recognising our athletes’ achievements and building on their successes. It’s a celebration of their hard work and a platform to propel them to even greater heights,” said Anuruddha Shanaka Bandara, the Sri Lankan Boxing President.
