The 2020 edition of the Children of Asia Games has been postponed and waits for a new date
The Children of Asia Games has been postponed due to the Covid-19 Coronavirus situation which spread around the world. The Children of Asia Games is the most important junior boxing event in our continent. The original date was August 15-25 and the Mongolian capital Ulaanbaatar should have been the host of the new edition of the Children of Asia Games.
Children of Asia Games is a multisport event to promote Asia’s sport and culture among the young 14-17-year-old future hopes and boxing is on the official program. The capital of the Sakha region in the Russian Federation Yakutsk hosted events every four years and the next edition moved to Ulaanbaatar but postponed for a later date than August.
The first edition was held in Yakutsk in 1996 and organized by the first President of the Sakha Republic Mikhail Nikolayev to commemorate the Centennial of the modern Olympic Games. In the 2012 edition 108 junior boxers took part from the Asian countries, furthermore Russia and Azerbaijan. Russia won seven gold medals on home soil, Kazakhstan claimed four titles while Azerbaijan earned two gold medals in Yakutsk. Kazakhstan’s Nanjing 2014 Youth Olympic Games winner and two-time AIBA World Boxing Championships bronze medallist Ablaikhan Zhussupov won the gold medal in Yakutsk eight years ago.
The last edition of the Children of Asia Games was held in the city of Yakutsk, Russia in 2016 where the continent’s best junior boxers met each other to decide the prizes in 18 different weight classes. At the very first time the talented girls could also take part in the boxing tournament of the Children of Asia Games.
The host Russians claimed nine gold medals while Kazakhstan, Mongolia, Philippines and Kyrgyzstan also achieved titles in Yakutsk. The junior men boxers could compete in 13 divisions while the girls could box in 5 categories in Yakutsk four years ago. Boxers who were born in 2000 and in 2001 were eligible to compete in the boxing tournament of the Games. The biggest names among the winners were Philippines’ Cristian Pitt Laurente and Kazakhstan’s duo Aibek Oralbay and Damir Toybay.
