The 105th Sri Lankan Stubbs Shields Championships recorded 424 bouts in Colombo

The promising Sri Lankans arranged their next national event, the Stubbs Shields Boxing Championships which is one of the oldest competitions in the South Asian island. This was the 105th edition of the championships which was held in the Royal MAS Arena in Colombo.

The Stubbs Shields is the All Islands School Games where the junior, youth and young senior boxers are able to participate. Altogether 36 champions have been crowned in the Stubbs Shields Championships where the level of women’s boxing was strong enough. The organizer of the competition was the Education Ministry and Schools Boxing Association.

Their last project, the Layton Cup Boxing Tournament was held at the Negombo Beach, following the competition moved there from the Royal MAS Arena. The event supported the promotion of boxing in Sri Lanka which country will send record number of boxers to the upcoming ASBC Asian Elite Boxing Championships.

Fantastic number of 132 teams competed in the new edition of the Stubbs Shields Boxing Championships where altogether 424 bouts were in the official program. The competition was divided into six busy sessions and the last 36 contests decided the champions of the event.

Kandy’s St. Sylvester College won four gold, two silver and one bronze medal in the Stubbs Shields Championships and remained champions four times-in-a-row which was their 18th team success of all times.

Thenuwan Bandara Meegalla, Royal’s captain and Taipei City Box Cup gold medalist, was awarded the prestigious Col. T.Y. Wright Challenge Cup as the Best Boxer in the Senior Boys division showing his impressive technical skills.

In the Girls’ division, Siri Perakum Vidyalaya, Kotagala emerged champions with three gold medals and one silver, while Sri Pragnarathne Central College, Gelioya earned runner-up with three golds and three bronzes.

Chathuni Jagathya Siriwardhana of Hemamali Girls College, Kandy, received the Best Female Boxer award in the Senior Girls’ 48kg category and she defeated MKM Muthuni of Dharmaloka College, Pelmadulla.
