Thailand’s three-time Olympian Chatchai Decha Butdee – My country was happy and proud of me to qualify for Tokyo
Thailand’s Chatchai Decha Butdee is a veteran boxer at the men’s featherweight (57kg) but he is still in top shape and in superb physical condition. The 35-year-old boxer qualified for the Tokyo 2021 Olympic Games through the Asian & Oceanian Olympic Boxing Qualifying Event which was held in Amman, Jordan two and half months ago.
Butdee joined to the international stage 13 years ago when he won the Preolympic Games Test Event in 2007. Butdee won the gold medal at the 2009 Southeast Asian Games before reaching his career highlights, bronze at the Almaty 2013 AIBA World Boxing Championships and the title of the Bangkok 2015 ASBC Asian Boxing Championships. Tokyo will be his third Olympic Games participation after London and Rio de Janeiro.
“I am proud of that I could qualify for the Tokyo Olympic Games in the Asian & Oceanian Olympic Boxing Qualifying Event. This Olympic Games will be my third one after London and Rio de Janeiro therefore I know the environment of the Olympics and I am sure I can handle the pressure.
I did not get any medals in my previous two Olympic Games and my target is clear to get a podium place in Tokyo. All of my rivals are talented and well-experienced in my strong weight class. Many of them also fast therefore I had tough job in the Asian & Oceanian Olympic Boxing Qualifying Event.
My country was happy and proud of me to get the quota for the Tokyo Olympic Games and I received also many supports from my family. The quarter-final in Amman should have been easy but I made a mistake therefore in the Box-off against the South Korean I was so concentrated and motivated not to make any wrong movements. My coaches arranged a training program for me and I followed it also during the quarantine period as well,” said Thailand’s three-time Olympian Chatchai Decha Butdee who is one of the most experienced boxers at the featherweight (57kg) not only in the Asian continent but in the whole globe.
