Thai bets Sukthet, Yeasungnoen win in Shokhr Boltekuly opener
Thailand’s star boxers Sarawut Sukthet and Peerapat Yeasungnoen whipped up victorious debuts in the opening day of the 14th Shokhr Boltekuly Memorial Tournament in Aktau, Kazakhstan.
Sukthet, an ASBC Asian youth champion and a Youth Olympic Games silver winner who just returned to the international stage last month after recovering from an injury, dominated Maksud Khasmetov of Azerbaijan, 5-0, in the featherweight (57kg) division.
His teammate Yeasungnoen, a former AIBA Youth World Championships bronze medalist, managed to eke out a 3-2 split decision win against hometown bet Armat Armanuly in the light middleweight (71kg) category.
Meanwhile, Uzbekistan’s Asian U22 champ and former junior world titilst Timur Merjanov crushed Zhasulan Omar of Kazakhstan, 5-0, in the cruiserweight (86kg) class.
Fellow Uzbek and ex-Asian junior silver finisher Oybek Jurayev also posted the same lopsided victory over Azrak Babirov of Azerbaijan in featherweight.
A total of 24 bouts took place on the first day of the international elite men’s tilt named in honor of the Kazakh boxing pioneer Mr. Shokhr Boltekuly and organized by the Boxing Federation of the Mangystau Region. This year’s edition of the traditional tourney is part of the participating federations’ preparation for the upcoming ASBC Asian Elite Boxing Championships 2022 slated on October 30 to November 13 in Amman, Jordan.
