Tashkenbay, other Asian champs zoom to Shokhr Boltekuly finals

Kazakhstan’s youth stalwart Sanzhar Tashkenbay and fellow Asian winners took care of their respective semifinal assignments in the 14th Shokhr Boltekuly Memorial Tournament on Saturday in the Kazakh city of Aktau.

Tashkenbay, who bagged titles in the AIBA Youth World Championships and Asian Youth Championships last year, dictated the rhythm right from the opening bell against compatriot Yernar Karap en route to an easy 5-0 victory and a seat in the minimumweight (48kg) final.

Fellow Kazakh and 2021 Asian youth champion Nursultan Altynbek executed efficient footwork to whip up a 4-1 triumph over countryman Bekzat Aldamzharov in the bantamweight (54kg) division.

Former Asian youth winner Biybars Zheksen and world youth silver finisher Yerbolat Sabyr secured a gold medal for Kazakhstan in the featherweight (57kg) class after dispatching separate opponents.

Uzbekistan’s Asian youth titlist Nusratbek Tokhirov built a decent  lead against Azerbaijan’s veteran Rauf Rakhimov in two rounds before seizing a 5-0 win in the heavyweight (92kg) category.

Meanwhile, Thailand’s Southeast Asian Games silver medalist Khunatip Pidnuch enjoyed a walkover against hometown bet Sultan Musinov in light welterweight (63.5kg). The traditional men’s elite tourney, named after the Kazakh boxing pioneer Mr. Shokhr Boltekuly, is part of the seven participating federations’ preparation for the upcoming ASBC Asian Elite Championships 2022 on October 30 to November 13 in Amman, Jordan.
