Tamang, Gurung lead Nepal squad for Women’s World Championships following selection
National stars Susma Tamang and Minu Gurung will spearhead Nepal in the upcoming IBA Women’s World Boxing Championships after the recent staging of the Women’s National Selection Tournament in Lalitpur.
ASBC Asian U22 Championships silver medalist and Youth World Championships 2021 quarterfinalist Tamang claimed the minimumweight (48kg) title and secured her spot in the national squad without any opposition.
Asian Grand Slam silver finisher Gurung, for her part, climbed to the bantamweight (54kg) class where she trounced Sharmila Taman via unanimous decision in the final.
Veteran boxer Saraswati Rana Magar dominated the younger Asian U22 bronze winner Trisha Jabegu to snare the middleweight (75kg) gold.
Completing the record seven-strong Nepalese team for the world tilt are Asmita Duwal (light fly-50kg), Anjani Teli (fly-52kg), Chandrakala Thapa (feather-57kg) and Asina Games competitor Sangita Sunar (light-60kg).
Anjani Teli is a new face in Nepal’s female boxing life but she had the speed and technical skills to beat her rivals including Barsha Shrestha in the final of the flyweight (52kg).
Nepal will shoot for its first-ever Women’s World Championships medal in New Delhi, India on March 15-26.
