Syria’s Ahmad Ghossoun bowed out the former World Champion at the Arab Games on Day1
The boxing tournament of the Arab Sports Games opened with 15 male contests in Algeria’s capital in Algiers. Syria’s Ahmad Ghossoun eliminated Morocco’s former World Champion Mohammed Rabii but Jordan’s Hussein Iashaish also had a key success on Day1.
The women’s and the men’s finals will be held on the sixth competition day on July 12. Host Algeria, Iraq, Jordan, Libya, Morocco, Palestine, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Sudan, Syria, Tunisia, United Arab Emirates and Yemen are the participating nations in the boxing tournament of the Arab Sports Games.
Jordan’s reigning ASBC Asian Champion and the historic World Boxing Championships bronze medallist Mohammad Adnan Abu Jajeh opened his campaign in Algeria’s capital on the first day of boxing. He faced Iraq’s experienced Jaafar Abdulridha Ali Al-Sudani and the bout was closer than expected in the first round of the men’s lightweight (60kg). Abu Jajeh worked from longer distance but Al-Sudani also had the similar strategy and Jordan’s top boxer had to work hard until the last moments to win their narrow contest.
The former Junior World Boxing Championships silver medallist Sahm Qarrar Khadim Al-Ezirej is Iraq’s best hope for a title in the Arab Sports Games. The 28-year-old boxer had a competitive rival first, Saudi Arabia’s Khaled Ahmed Khubrani proved that he developed well enough in the recent one year. The judges’ scorecards showed equal scores after two rounds but Al-Ezirej’s great finish decided their welterweight (67kg) contest and the 27-year-old Saudi boxer was disqualified.
Syria’s Mediterranean Games winner Ahmad Ghossoun has eleven years of international experiences but he prepared a hard battle against Morocco’s Mohammed Rabii who returned to the world of boxing. The Moroccan was World Champion in 2015 and he earned a bronze medal at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games but Ghossoun’s speed decided their contest and the Syrian marched to the semi-finals of the middleweight (75kg).
Jordan’s ASBC Asian Champion and two-time Olympian Hussein Iashaish also had a tough rival in his opener, Algeria’s Younes Nemouchi who earned several medals in the international events during his career. Jordan’s pride worked a lot on feet and he overcame the Algerian boxer in the attacks well enough to win their light heavyweight (80kg) bout. Syria’s heavyweight (92kg) veteran Alaaldin Ghossoun walked over to the next stage following Sudan’s Abdelazim Abdalla was unable to box against him.
The boxing event of the Arab Sports Games to be continued with seven female and eleven male contests in the second competition day.
