Syria and Iraq both earned two gold medals in the Arab Junior Boxing Championships which was held in Kuwait City
The Arab Junior Boxing Championships was held for the male talents in Kuwait City which hosted the 1st ASBC Asian Confederation Schoolboys Boxing Championships in 2019. Thirteen weight classes were contested in the Arab Junior Boxing Championships and among these 13 winners Syria and Iraq claimed four gold medals in Kuwait City where 74 boxers fought for these titles.
The important competition was a milestone for many of these junior talents in their career and a successful step before the Children of Asia Games which is the top event for them this year and will be held in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia on August. Boxers who were born in 2004 and in 2005 were eligible to attend in the Arab Junior Boxing Championships in Kuwait City.
Eleven nations competed for the medals in Kuwait City, among them five arrived from the African continent and six countries from Asia. Among the region’s Asian countries Syria, Iraq, Kuwait, Palestine, Qatar and United Arab Emirates sent their boxers to the Arab Junior Boxing Championships. Joining to the host nation of the event Algeria and Syria also competed with maximum number of 13 boxers in Kuwait City.
The medal rankings were topped by Algeria with their five titles, while Egypt became the runner-up with four titles. Syria became the best Asian team with two gold, two silver and five bronze medals which performance was enough to be on the third in the overall team ranking. Boxers from Iraq also impressed in Kuwait City with six medals including two titles in the Arab Junior Boxing Championships.
The first Asian gold medal in the Arab Junior Boxing Championships was achieved by Iraq’s Mohammed Hussein Jasim who is a new addition to their national team in this age group. He was born in 2005 and competed at the 2019 ASBC Asian Schoolboys Boxing Championships and those international experiences supported his title in Kuwait City. The 14-year-old talent eliminated Syria’s favourite Mohamad Ali Baddour in the semi-finals and continued his winning path in the final against Kuwait’s Shabab Al-Abdullah.
Syria achieved two gold medals in the Arab Junior Boxing Championships which was an amazing effort from the country which has many issues due the situation since 2011. Despite of their hard times, the Syrians shined in the event in Kuwait City where their first title was achieved by Alhussein Ali Al-Maddad who landed tough punches against Algeria’s Mohamed Bensot in the final of the light welterweight (63kg). Syria’s second gold medal was captured by Bashar Shreki in the next final at the welterweight (66kg) where he defeated Morocco’s Mohamed Amine by split decision.
Iraq’s Kareem Kadhim Durgham is a 187cm tall boxer at the light middleweight (70kg) who trains with coach Emad Saeed in Baghdad. The Iraqi boxer will be turning to 16 only on September but he had all of the skills to take the gold medal of this weight class. Durgham was too strong for Algeria’s Mohamed Kaiber in the semi-finals and proved slightly better performance than Egypt’s Mohamed Belal Awad in the final.
The host country of the Arab Junior Boxing Championships, the Kuwaiti team earned one silver and seven bronze medals on home soil. Mr. Nader Jayousi’s team the promising Palestinians had two bronze medals in the event but Wasim Abusal (48kg) and Jadd Rajab (54kg) both were near to reach the finals against top opponents.
