Strong girls represent South Korea in the upcoming Asian Games
The management of the South Koreans decided to send maximum number of thirteen boxers to the upcoming Asian Games. The South Korean boxers are planning to achieve medals and spots for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.
The South Koreans spent the recent months mostly in training camps together with other strong nations such as Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, Chinese Taipei and others. Team South Korea will have still further training sessions and sparring actions with Turkey and Thailand before the start of the Asian Games.
The 1996 Atlanta Olympian Mr. Han Hyung Min, a former Olympic Games silver medallist Mr. Han Soon Chul and the former two-time Women’s World Champion Canadian, Mrs. Ariane Fortin-Brochu are the coaches who selected the team to Hangzhou.
Six female and seven male boxers have been selected to represent the country which has bright tradition in the history of the Asian Games. South Korea is the No.1 in the boxing events of the Asian Games with 59 gold, 25 silver and 30 bronze medals which they earned between 1954 and 2018. The South Korean boxers topped the medal standings of the Asian Games eight-times, in 1962, 1966, 1970, 1974, 1978, 1982, 1986 and 1990.
The South Korean girls impressed at the ASBC Asian Elite Boxing Championships in Amman one year ago where the team earned one gold, one silver and four bronze medals. one of the promising Korean girls, Bak Cho Rong was bronze medallist in 2022 but she moved up to the light flyweight (50kg) to be there in the Asian Games.
The 2017 Youth World Champion and the Tokyo Olympian Im Ae Ji moved down to the bantamweight (54kg) which is better for her height and physical parameters. Oh Yeon Ji is the top star of the team who earned gold medal at the 2018 Asian Games and she won three editions of the ASBC Asian Women’s Boxing Championships.
Jin Hye Jeong (57kg), the silver medallist from the 2017 ASBC Championships, Seon Su Jin (66kg) and the 2022 ASBC Asian Boxing Championships bronze medallist Seong Su Yeon (75kg) are the further female members of the travelling team.
The South Korean male boxers delivered a few international victories and the team has the potential but they were not able to make big impacts yet. Jo Se Hyeong (51kg) and Lee Ye Chan (57kg) both have more than five years of international experiences and might be Hangzhou will be the venue of their breakthrough.
Lee Jong Seung (63.5kg), Lee Sang Min (71kg), Kim Jin Jea (80kg), Jeong Jae Min (92kg) and the veteran Kim Do Hyeon (+92kg) are further male boxers in the travelling team. Most of their male boxers reached the quarter-finals in the 2022 ASBC Asian Elite Boxing Championships but failed to get a medal in Amman.
