Stars as Sarjubala Shamjetsabam Devi and Sonia Lather Singh wins in the Indian Women’s National Championships

The Indian Women’s National Championships was one of the first big female event in 2018 which was taking place in Rohtak where record number of 255 athletes competed for the medals and prizes. AIBA Women’s World Boxing Championships medallists as Sarjubala Shamjetsabam Devi and Sonia Lather Singh won titles in Rohtak.
Chungneijang Mary Kom Hmangte claimed gold medal in the ASBC Asian Confederation Women’s Boxing Championships in Ho Chi Minh City but she had to miss the Indian Women’s National Championships in Rohtak. India topped the team rankings at the AIBA Women’s Youth World Boxing Championships in Guwahati which shows their background is stronger than ever.
The first gold medal was achieved by Rajesh Narwal who is relatively new boxer in the elite competitions and used up her speed in the final to win the light flyweight (48kg). She defeated national team member Monika in the gold medal contest and in Mary Kom’s absence she was thankful and collected her first title.
Sarjubala Shamjetsabam Devi was silver medallist at the light flyweight (48kg) in the Jeju 2014 AIBA Women’s World Boxing Championships but since then she had a few poor years in our sport. The 24-year-old boxer was well prepared to the national event and in her new category at the flyweight (51kg) she defeated Ritu in the final. AIBA Women’s World Boxing Championships quarter-finalist Nikhat Zareen achieved only bronze medal in Rohtak.
Meena Kumari Maisnam is member of the national team since 2012 who competed in the Jeju 2014 AIBA Women’s World Boxing Championships with successes. The experienced boxer defeated young Jamuna Boro in the semi-final and did not give any chance to Manisha in the final of the bantamweight (54kg).
AIBA Women’s World Boxing Championships silver medallist Sonia Lather Singh was confident in the whole competition and bagged the gold at the featherweight (57kg). She felt the rhythm well enough and she overtook her opponents in the attacks including AIBA Women’s Youth World Champion Shashi Chopra in the final.
Sarita Devi Laishram claimed gold medal in the 2006 AIBA Women’s World Boxing Championships and the veteran athlete returned to her lightweight (60kg). The 36-year-old boxer used the perfect tactic against national team member Ramilal Pavitra in the final of the National Championships. Another experienced Indian woman boxer Priyanka Chaudhary achieved only bronze medal in Rohtak.
Pwilao Basumatary’s international career began at the 2011 AIBA Women’s Youth World Boxing Championships in Turkey and she needed a few years to join to the bests among the elite boxers. The 24-year-old light welterweight (64kg) boxer defeated Simranjit Kaur in the final of the national event.
Pooja is a new face in the elite national team who used up her strength to beat a young talent, ASBC Asian Confederation Women’s Boxing Championships competitor Lovlina Borgohain in the final of the welterweight (69kg). ASBC Asian Confederation Women’s Boxing Championships silver medallist Pooja Rani moved back to her original middleweight (75kg) and defeated Alari Boro in the final.
Following her great performance in 2014, Bhagyawati Kachari regained her throne at the light heavyweight (81kg) in the National Championships after beating Kalawanti in the final. Seema Punia is India’s No.1 at the heavyweight (+81kg) who proved her skills in the recent international competitions and did enough to beat Kavita Chahal in the gold medal bout.
