Sri Lankan National Championships set in late February

Serving as a crucial selection for international tournaments this year, the Sri Lankan National Championships will be held in the capital city of Colombo at the end of February.

National team standouts who saw action in the latest Commonwealth Games are expected to compete in the national tilt that will feature all the official weight classes in the men’s and women’s divisions.

Sri Lanka had several issues in the recent three years which made their boxing life difficult but the country competed at the 2022 ASBC Asian Youth & Junior Boxing Championships, at the Eindhoven Box Cup, the Birmingham Commonwealth Games and some other competitions in the previous one year. Sri Lanka earned medals at the 2022 ASBC Asian U22 Boxing Championships but the country’s best event was the 2018 Commonwealth Games.

The Sri Lankan Boxing Federation, led by its president and ASBC Board of Directors member Mr. Dian Gomes along with Secretary General Mr. Hemantha Weerasingh, seeks to discover talents who can battle it out in ASBC competitions and the Asian Games.

Sri Lanka will send a small delegation to the ASBC Asian U22 Championships set on January 16-27 in Bangkok, Thailand and plans to join several European international tourneys in April and May. Mr. Amila Aravinda will be their coach in the ASBC Asian U22 Boxing Championships who led the team also at the Commonwealth Games.

The Federation will also host the Layton Cup, Clifford Cup and the Stubbs Shields Championships while also eyeing to organize events for the U22, youth, junior, schoolboys and schoolgirls age groups. With all the tournaments lined up this year, the management of Sri Lanka boxing hopes to stage an international competition in 2024.
