Sri Lanka named its record-breaking 13-strong team to the ASBC Asian Elite Boxing Championships
Sri Lanka makes participation records in the international stage this year and their next appearance will be also record-breaking at the ASBC Asian Elite Men and Women Boxing Championships which will be held in Chiang Mai, Thailand from November 28.
The Sri Lankans had a huge delegation at the ASBC Asian Junior & Schoolboys & Schoolgirls Boxing Championships and the country selected 13-strong team to the ASBC Asian Elite Boxing Championships as well.
Their recent Layton Cup supported the decision makers to select the national team for Chiang Mai and their active President Dr. Anuruddha Shanaka Bandara has long term strategies to develop all areas of boxing in Sri Lanka. The 13 boxers began the last phase of the preparations at the Army Cantonment in Panagoda, in the suburbs of the capital city.
The Sri Lankan will use the ASBC Asian Elite Boxing Championships as active preparations for the 2026 Asian Games and 2026 Commonwealth Games. Both multisport events are the most important target for their management, boxers and coaches in the upcoming two years.
Sri Lanka’s best female boxer Nadeeka Pushpakumari has 12 years of boxing routine and she is a medal hope at the women’s minimumweight (48kg) in Chiang Mai. Ishara Thushari Perera will compete for Sri Lanka at the women’s light flyweight (50kg) following her several national titles.
Sanduni Priyadarshani moved up to the flyweight (52kg) this year and she will be making her international debut in Chiang Mai. Their most experienced female boxer, 33-year-old Kasthuri Arachchige Keshani Hansika recovered from her injuries in time to win the selection competition, the Layton Cup last month.
Hasitha Nuwan Jinadasa was named as the Best Boxer at the Layton Cup last month and the minimumweight (48kg) boxer is ready to show his skills in the international stage. Sri Lanka’s highest hope is the 21-year-old Umayanga Mihiran who almost qualified for the Paris Olympics and he has the strong expectations at the busy flyweight (51kg).
The Commonwealth Games quarter-finalist Podi Arachchige Rukmal Prasanna is a 25-year-old boxer at the featherweight (57kg) and he is the next top hope in the men’s elite national team next to Umayanga Mihiran.
Army’s Suranga Fernando and Air Force’s Chinthana Udayakumara both claimed gold medals at the Seychelles Independence Day Cup earlier this year. St. Sylvester’s Boxing Club’s Yazmin Muhammad Usaith is the youngest member in the national team, the 20-year-old Kandy-based middleweight (75kg) boxer
Further Layton Cup winners such as G. Jayanath K. Ravindu Kumara (54kg), H.A. Hansa Dilsara Hettiarachchi (63.5kg) and Y.S. Prathap Sudamma (86kg) are also involved to the travelling team.
