South Korea, Afghanistan and UAE won contests in the fourth session in the Asian Games
The winners of the women’s welterweight (66kg) advanced to the quarter-finals in the fourth session of the Asian Games in Hangzhou, China. South Korea, Afghanistan and United Arab Emirates won contests in this session and several of the stars also joined the next stage.
The South Korean coaches were confident about their women’s welterweight (66kg) boxer Seon Su Jin that she will be able to manage her contest against Japan’s Mai Kito. The ASBC medallist Korean started the first round better than her Japanese opponent and she took the lead in all of the judges’ scorecards after three minutes of fight. Kito received a warning in the second round and Seon was able to follow her level until the last gong to win this contest.
China’s Yang Liu is the current World Champion at the women’s welterweight (66kg) who also opened her campaign in this Asian Games. The 31-year-old Inner Mongolia-based boxer used her long distance tactics to control the first round against India’s Arundhati Choudhary and she was favoured in all of the five judges’ scorecards. The Chinese girl had brilliant counter-punches in each round and she advanced to the quarter-finals of the weight class.
Chinese Taipei proved excellent performance in the first two competition days in the Asian Games, Huang Hsiao Wen, Tu Po Wei and Kan Chia Wei all amazed in the previous sessions. Chen Nien Chin, the 2018 Women’s World Champion, opened the first exchanges with heavy shots against Nepal’s Binita Thapa Magar and her strength was decisive after 90 seconds. Her next opponent will be Tajikistan’s ASBC medallist Shoira Zulkaynarova who moved up to this weight class only this year.
India’s Deepak Bhoria did not underestimate Malaysia’s best boxer, their ASBC Asian U22 Championships bronze medallist Muhammad Abdul Qaiyum Bin Ariffin in the Round of 32 at the men’s flyweight (51kg). The World Championships bronze finisher felt the distance in their meeting and his double combinations reached the target several times. Qaiyum was competitive especially in the second round but his skills did not match to the Indian boxer’s knowledge.
Afghanistan was able to send three boxers to the Asian Games despite their difficulties and their men’s flyweight (51kg) talent, the 20-year-old Abdul Jabar Popalzai succeeded in the evening session. The young Afghan lost the first round against Bhutan’s best boxer, Tenzin Drugyel but he was able to change his tactics after the break. Popalzai was better in the exchanges from the second round and he was able to turn back their Round of 32 contest against a quarter-finalist from Amman.
Kazakhstan’s 2021 World Champion and Tokyo Olympics bronze medallist Saken Bibossynov controlled all of the three rounds against Mongolia’s Orkhontungalag Unubold and he won their contest by unanimous decision. The next star of the men’s flyweight (51kg) in action was Uzbekistan’s Rio Olympic Games winner Hasanboy Dusmatov who stopped his South Korean rival, Jo Se Hyeong in the second round. The two Central Asian stars will meet each other in the Round of 16 which could be the best fight of the weight class and an early final between them.
United Arab Emirates’ Sultan Al-Nuaimi is perfect in professional boxing, he is unbeaten and won most of his bouts by KO. UAE’s best boxer not only dominated his opener against Laos’ Vanesy Heuangthisouan but he knocked out his opponent in the second round of the flyweight (51kg). The next top athlete from the Western Asian region, the Tokyo Olympian Zeyad Eshaish was also too strong for his rival, United Arab Emirates’ Husain Alkandari at the light middleweight (71kg).
