Situmorang caused a sensation at the Indonesian Elite National Championships opener

The Indonesian Women’s and Men’s Elite National Championships started with 20 preliminary contests in the city of Makassar. Hari Rahmat Situmorang caused the main sensation of the first competition day but Saweho and Endang also impressed on their debuts.

The Provincial Management of the Indonesian Amateur Boxing Association of South Sulawesi arranged fantastic environment to this championship. The Makassar Sports & Convention Centre is a new sport facility where 284 boxers from 22 provinces are competing for the titles of the competition.

Boxers at the women’s minimumweight (48kg) were busy in the first competition day, eight bouts took place in this small category in Makassar. Jesika Umbas was the first winner of the entire competition, she defeated a former Indonesian international boxer, Anggelina Niis winning the bout unanimously.

Israellah Athena Saweho is only 19 but she won her first national event already in 2018 and her international contests from the Mohamed VI Trophy supported her easy success over Wa Ode Ayu Azhari. Endang represented Indonesia at the 2019 Women’s World Boxing Championships but she had to do her very best to beat Merlin Tomatala on Day1.

The men’s featherweight (57kg) also saw eight contests in the opener of the national event in Makassar and some of them delivered big battles between the boxers. Nolvy Engkeng eliminated Mikael Agus Inwasef while Eliezer Gonzales also delivered an excellent performance against Saipul.

Yosua Ronsumbre continued the family tradition and joined the next stage of boxing at the men’s featherweight (57kg) after beating Gelvin Rahmadi by split decision. Ahmad Irfan is not an experienced boxer in this weight class but his attacking style of boxing was enough to beat a veteran, Jance Masrikat who competed in national events first in 2015.

Hari Rahmat Situmorang is a new face at the middleweight (75kg) in Indonesia’s boxing life but he delivered the main sensation of the opening session in Makassar. He controlled his opener against a former National Champion Saputra Samada who represented Indonesia in the international stage in the last decade.

An Asian Games competitor, Bram Hendra Betaubun won the lone light heavyweight (80kg) contest of the day, he stopped Ahmad Jaela in the first round.
