Sindangan’s pride, Tyron Jay Quillosa defended his title at the Philippines’ Student National Games

The Philippines have several national and regional boxing tournaments, multisport competitions every year to find the best talents among their more than 7,000 islands.

The Philippines Palarong Pambansa, the Student National Games was held in Cebu City which is one of the popular destinations in the Southeast Asian country. Many of their top stars including Carlo Paalam, Eumir Felix Marcial or Ian Clark Bautista started their grassroots competitions in these kind of National Games in the past.

The event is one of the most important national competitions in the Philippines and the schoolboys, the junior boxers and the youth hopefuls are all able to participate in the boxing event of the Palarong Pambansa.

The schoolboys could compete in two weight categories in the Palarong Pambansa in Cebu City where Angel Joshua Pana from Ormoc won the first title after beating Jarrell Mark Ancajas at the 46kg weight class. Cris Ivhan Espina from Central Visayas celebrated the second gold medal in the schoolboys age group, following his triumph over John Elmer Napoles at the 48kg.

Philippines sent just a small team to the recent ASBC Asian Junior Boxing Championships but their winners in the Palarong Pambansa all have great future potential. Iligan City’s Mark Joseph Manquiquis won one of the most exciting finals against Mark Alfie Castillo at the junior pinweight (46kg).

Tyron Jay Quillosa made proud his community, the Sindangan National Agricultural School once again in the Palarong Pambansa. He claimed the title in the 2023 edition and the 16-yar-old boxer repeated that gold medal after beating Jaervi June Hernani at the junior bantamweight (54kg) in Cebu City.

Mark Davidson Veloso won two contests in the 2023 Palarong Pambansa before he was stopped by one of the stars, Clark Vicera but this time he was too smart for all of his opponents including A.J. Vicente as well. Edcel Dayrit from Western Visayas has five years of routine in the national and regional competitions which paid off in the final of the youth bantamweight (54kg) against Justine Trazo.

The event was an excellent opportunity for all of the boxers to show their progress in the sport, and make themselves into the spotlight for the Association’s decision makers.

The Philippines has some top junior and youth boxers who have been selected to their 43-strong national pool.
