Shahbakhsh narrowly enters Iranian Elite finals
Iran’s boxing star Danial Shahbakhsh needed to overcome a tough opponent to make his way into the final of the lightweight (60kg) division of the Iranian Elite National Championships in Zahedan.
The 22-year-old Shahbakhsh, the country’s first-ever medalist in the AIBA World Boxing Championships after he snared a bronze in the 2021 edition, survived shaky moments against Mobin Alei to ensure his victory in their semifinal tussle.
Shahbakhsh, who also won a silver in the ASBC Asian Elite Championships 2021 and represented Iran in the Tokyo Olympics, will take on Mohammad Kamali in the title bout.
Iran’s other Tokyo Olympian in Seyed Shahin Mousavi (middleweight-75kg), fellow national team members Ashkan Rezaei, Bagher Faraji (light welter-63.5kg), Moslem Maghsoudi (light middle-71kg), Siavash Omidi (light heavy-80kg), Hossein Daneshvar, Amin Majnouni (cruiser-86kg), Toufan Sharifi (heavy-92kg) and Iman Ramezanpour (super heavy-92kg up) also advanced to the finals of their respective weight classes.
The Iranian Elite national tilt, which is pitting the best boxers born between 1982 and 2003 in the 13 official weight categories, serves as the selection tournament for the ASBC Asian Elite Championships next year.
