Shafiyev and So eliminated professional boxers in Bangkok today

Tajikistan’s Mekhron Shafiyev and DPR Korea’s So Chon Ryong eliminated professional boxers in the second competition day at the 2nd World Olympic Boxing Qualifying Event in Bangkok, Thailand today.

Altogether 579 boxers from 133 countries are participating in the 2nd World Olympic Boxing Qualifying Event in Bangkok where the total number of the available quotas for the Paris 2024 Olympics is 51. The number of the coaches, officials and team delegations members is 610 in Thailand.

Tajikistan’s Mekhron Shafiyev competed in the Asian Games, in the 1st World Olympic Boxing Qualifying Event and in the ASBC Asian U22 Boxing Championships as well. The 21-year-old flyweight (51kg) boxer is in promising stage and he proved his excellent technical skills against a professional veteran, Carlos Suarez of Trinidad & Tobago. Shafiyev’s opponent received three warnings within four minutes from the referee and he was disqualified from this bout.

DPR Korea’s So Chon Ryong was bronze medallist in the recent Asian Games and he is one of the quota contenders at the men’s flyweight (51kg). The 21-year-old North Korean used his counter-attacking style of boxing against Israel’s professional boxer David Alaverdian and his speed was the difference between them today.

Abhimanyu Loura replaced Lakshya Chahar at the light heavyweight (80kg) in the Indian national team and he built up a strong strategy against Bulgaria’s Kristiyan Nikolov before the bout. The 23-year-old Indian opened the first round better than his European opponent and he was able to continue in the same level until the last gong.

Mongolia’s Gan-Erdene Gankhuyag, the former Asian Games silver finisher, returned to the national team and the 31-year-old veteran moved forward a step to qualify for his second Olympic Games. The Mongolian did not underestimate Saudi Arabia’s best male boxer, Abdulaziz Khalid Alatbi and he won all of the three rounds in the judges’ scorecards.

Jordan’s Huthaifa Eshish caused already a few unexpected victories in the recent international events and he had a fantastic success against Bulgaria’s European silver medallist Ergyunal Sebahtin Sabri at the flyweight (51kg). Iran’s strong attacker, Meysam Gheshlaghi also eliminated a well-experienced rival, South Korea’s Kim Jin Jea who reached the quarter-finals in the 1st World Olympic Boxing Qualifying Event.

Kazakhstan’s two-time World Champion Nazym Kyzaibay received the second chance to qualify for the Paris Olympics after the Asian Games. The 31-year-old light flyweight (50kg) boxer knew her European opponent well enough, Nicole Durikova and she used her unpredictable footwork to catch the Slovakian in the first round. Kyzaibay finished the job in the second round when the referee stopped this preliminary after her strong shots.

Sri Lanka’s two-time National Champion Umayanga Mihiran is only 21 but he is currently his nation’s best male boxer. The Sri Lankan flyweight (51kg) talent used the recent ASBC Asian U22 Boxing Championships as an active preparation for Bangkok where he opened his campaign with a success over Singapore’s Teo Wei Xuan.

Tajikistan’s Nekruz Salimov replaced their Tokyo Olympian boxer Shabbos Negmatulloev at the light heavyweight (80kg) and he was highly motivated in his first huge elite championship. The Tajik had the stamina and the finish to beat Uganda’s former Olympian Musa Shadiri Bwogi in one of the hectic contests of the day.

Thailand’s Weerapon Jongjoho continued his nation’s winning path, the 23-year-old light heavyweight (80kg) boxer eliminated another World bronze medallist, Vladimir Mironchikov of Serbia. Kyrgyzstan’s powerful Omurbek Bekzhigit Uulu destroyed his opponent’s defence and he dominated his preliminary bout against Slovakia’s Tokyo Olympian Andrej Csemez.
