Seventeen young Afghans bagged gold medals at the Shahid Hameedi Memorial Tournament

The Afghanistan National Boxing Federation had several difficulties in the previous years but the country was able to host already two competitions in 2023. Seventeen young talents claimed their gold medals in the Shahid Hameedullah Memorial Tournament including nine schoolboys and eight juniors.

The tournament was named after Mr. Shaheed Hameedullah Hameedi, the former Secretary General of the Afghanistan Boxing Federation who has been killed in Kabul when he went to work to his office at a weekend. The President of the Afghanistan National Boxing Federation Mr. Abdullah Sattari launched the event in 2019 to remember his greatness.

The first edition of the Shahid Hameedullah Hameedi Memorial Tournament was held in October 2019 nearly four years ago. Afghanistan was able to host the event in the most difficult period as well which is their huge commitment to boxing.

Kabul was the host of the event as in all of the previous editions and welcomed the participants from four regions this time. Kabul, Panjshir, Nengarhar and Parwan sent their teams to the new edition of the Shahid Hameedullah Hameedi Memorial Tournament. The total number of 100 schoolboys and junior hopes competed for the medals in the annual Shaheed Hameedullah Hameedi Memorial Tournament.

A Sultani Boxing Club talent, Saraj Sultani won the smallest junior weight class, the pinweight (46kg), following his success over Tasal Safi in the final. Mohammad Ghulami represented the Hameedi Boxing Club in the event, he controlled his bantamweight (54kg) final against Buhran Rabani of Kabul. Star Kabul Club’s Farukh Sakhi (57kg) and Oqab’s Sadam Khan Lali (60kg) also impressed with their performance in the event.

Nengarhar’s Ehsanullah Safi made a remarkable progress and he destroyed Mohammand Subhan at the schoolboys 38kg weight class. Watan’s Surabi Hotak continued the family traditions and he earned the title of the schoolboys 36kg division. Other notable winners among the schoolboys were Sulaiman Noori (42kg), Habir Watan (51kg) and Mohammad Ashraf Asil (57kg).

Their next competition, the Afghanistan Junior National Championships will be starting for the 2007 and 2008 born boxers in the upcoming days.
