Serik Temirzhanov made an impressive debut at the 63.5kg in the Shokhr Boltekuly Memorial Tournament

Kazakhstan’s next international competition, the 15th Shokhr Boltekuly Memorial was held in the boxing city of Aktau. Kazakhstan’s World Championships silver medallist Serik Temirzhanov made a debut in his weight class and he won all of his contests in the preparation event.

The organizer of the traditional international tournament was the Boxing Federation of the Mangystau Region. All of the 13 official male divisions were in actions in Aktau from the minimumweight (48kg) up to the super heavyweight (+92kg). One of Kazakhstan’s former World Champions in boxing, Mr. Yerdos Dzhanagerbenov was among the organizers of the competition.

Mr. Shokhr Boltekuly was one of the pioneers of boxing in Kazakhstan, he had an important role to build up the sport in the country during the period of the Soviet Union still in the 1920s and 1930s. He trained several generation of boxers in Kazakhstan and the event holds the name of the iconic boxing coach.

Almaty’s Yernur Kairat was the first winner in the Shokhr Boltekuly Memorial Tournament, he defeated a local boxer, Daryn Kulzhanayev in the final of the minimumweight (48kg). The 2021 ASBC Asian Elite Boxing Championships silver medallist Daniyal Sabit caused the main sensation of the finals, he defeated the World Champion Sanzhar Tashkenbay at the flyweight (51kg) in Aktau.

Mangystau region’s Samat Zhetibayev had a tight final against Kenzhe Muratuly at the bantamweight (54kg) but he delighted the local boxing fans. The ASBC Asian U22 winner Nursultan Altynbek defeated the defending champion, Yerbolat Sabyr and he made a strong debut at the featherweight (57kg).

Serik Temirzhanov, the silver medallist of the 2021 World Championships and the Tokyo Olympian, moved up to the light welterweight (63.5kg) and his debut was successful, the 25-year-old boxer defeated Yerassyl Tankay in the final. A local talent, Rakhat Seitzhan won the welterweight (67kg), while the Youth World Champion Sabyrzhan Akkalykov defeated such strong rivals as Sanatali Toltayev and Farukh Tokhtasunov at the light middleweight (71kg).

The 2019 World Champion Bekzat Nurdauletov stopped the two-time ASBC Asian Youth Champion Temirlan Mukatayev at the men’s cruiserweight (86kg), returning to the international competitions. Arman Makhkomov was Uzbekistan’s lone winner in the tournament while a local boxer, Aiboldy Daurenuly used his athletic skills to beat Damir Toybay at the super heavyweight (+92kg).
