Sebusiso Keketsi – “Lesotho is dreaming about an Olympic medal in Tokyo therefore we attended in an important Asian event”
Mr. Sebusiso Keketsi is the head coach of the Lesotho national elite boxing team which attended in the Thailand Open International Boxing Tournament at the very first time. Lesotho is an enclaved small kingdom in Southern Africa with the population of around 2 million but their boxing life is near to the top countries in their continent.
As a boxer Mr. Sebusiso Keketsi claimed bronze medal in the 1999 All Africa Games and qualified for the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games and he was quarter-finalist in the 2002 Commonwealth Games. We asked him after the Thailand Open International Boxing Tournament to show us Lesotho’s boxing life.
“The Thailand Open International Boxing Tournament was an amazing event, we are more than happy that our delegation from Lesotho represents here in Bangkok. We were planning to send two boxers but our experienced boxer Qhobesheane Mohlerepe was not able to join to us.
Rio 2016 Olympian and two-time All Africa Games bronze medallist Mokhotho Moroke competed in the Thailand Open International Boxing Tournament and we believe that he worked hard in the preliminary round. We have been preparing him to the next Olympic Games and this wonderful tournament in Bangkok was a good experience for him.
Lesotho attended in the boxing tournament of the Olympic Games at the very first time in 1984. We could compete in five Olympics since 1984 and two of our boxers qualified for the last Rio 2016 Olympic Games.
We attended in the Commonwealth Games as last in Gold Coast this April where we attended with six boxers and among them two reached the quarter-finals. We can work with 50 selected boxers in Lesotho and we had a very busy year in 2017 when we hosted seven national events in the Kingdom.
We have got development programs for the future and we know we will have another busy year in 2019 with the All Africa Games, AFBC African Confederation Boxing Championships and other events.
The qualification events for the Olympic Games are the most important for the Lesotho Boxing and we are dreaming about a medal in the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games. We know it will be hard to achieve it but we will do our very best,” said Lesotho’s head coach Mr. Sebusiso Keketsi in Bangkok.
