SEA Games winner Truong Dinh Hoang knocked out his rival in the semi-finals at the Vietnam Elite National Championships

Twenty-one male semi-final contests were held in the sixth competition day at the Vietnam Boxing Federation’s Elite National Championships in Bac Ninh province. The winners remained their chance alive to win the title of the National Championships where their experienced male star Truong Dinh Hoang knocked out his opponent.

Vietnam Boxing Federation hosted their National Cup for the elite boxers earlier and the country continues its activities for them. Women or men boxers who were born between 1980 and 2001 are eligible to attend in the National Championships. The President of the Vietnam Boxing Federation Mr. Tran Minh Tien opened the Elite National Boxing Championships where all of the provinces can attend throughout the country.

The competition is also a selection for the elite boxers before the World Olympic Boxing Qualifying Event which will be held on June 2021. Vietnam achieved its first male quota place in the Asian & Oceanian Olympic Boxing Qualifying Event where Nguyen Van Duong achieved bronze medal and qualified for the Tokyo Olympics. Vietnam’s best boxer ASBC Asian Women’s Champion Nguyen Thi Tam did not qualify for the Games yet.

Altogether 62 female and 88 male boxers are attending for the medals in the Vietnam Elite National Championships in Bac Ninh province. The most popular category among the girls is the lightweight (60kg) with the participation of 10 boxers. Among the men boxers surprisingly the super heavyweight (+91kg) is the most crowded with 12 entries after the general weigh-in.

ASBC Asian Youth Boxing Championships competitor Nguyen Linh Phung controlled all of the three rounds against Tran Minh Huy in the semi-finals of the light flyweight (49kg) and he needs only one further challenge to be crowned in the National Championships. The young talent will be meeting for the gold medal with Tat Hoang Thanh of Ho Chi Minh City.

Bui Trong Thai competed in the World Military Games, in the ASBC Asian Elite Boxing Championships and two editions of the Southeast Asian Games therefore he is the main favourite of the flyweight (52kg). The experienced national team member eliminated Pham Van Thanh in the semi-finals and will now meet for the gold medal with Bui Cong Danh Loi who had also a clear victory in the last four.

Nguyen Van Duong caused one of the main sensations at the Asian & Oceanian Olympic Boxing Qualifying Event and got the spot for the Tokyo Olympics. The bantamweight (56kg) boxer walked over to the final in Bac Ninh province and he has strong chance to win his next national title against Ngo Tuan Anh.

The best final pair realized at the men’s light welterweight (64kg) where experienced international boxers as Nguyen Van Chung and Vu Thanh Dat will be meeting for the gold medal. Vietnam’s most experienced male boxer, two-times Southeast Asian Games silver medallist veteran Nguyen Van Hai moved up to the welterweight (69kg) but dominated his semi-final over Tran Viet Anh which means he can box for the title of the category against Tran Duc Tho.

Vietnam’s best male result in the recent years was achieved by Truong Dinh Hoang who claimed gold medal at the Southeast Asian Games. The 30-year-old boxer was also near to qualify for the Tokyo Olympic Games and since then he moved back to the light heavyweight (81kg). Truong decided his semi-final quickly, he knocked out Nguyen Van Huy in the first round and advanced to the final.
