Reigning World Champions as Sabyrkhan and Shymbergenov won their first bouts at the Elorda Cup

Reigning World Champions as Makhmud Sabyrkhan and Aslanbek Shymbergenov both opened their campaigns successfully at the Kazakhstan Boxing Federation’s main international event, in the 3rd Elorda Cup in Astana today.

The organizers of the Elorda Cup are the Department of Physical Culture and Sports of Astana City and the Kazakhstan Boxing Federation. Kazakhstan has just hosted the ASBC Asian U22 & Youth Boxing Championships and the Elorda Cup is their next event in Astana.

The women boxers will be able to compete from the minimumweight (48kg) up to the heavyweight (+81kg) in Astana. The male boxers will be boxing for the medals from the minimumweight (48kg) up to the super heavyweight (+92kg).

The number of the female boxers is 68 in Astana and 110 male athletes will fight for the titles in the 3rd edition of the Elorda Cup.

Kazakhstan’s World Champion Makhmud Sabyrkhan has already qualified for the Paris Olympics and he uses the Elorda Cup as a preparation for the top event of the year. He had to meet another Olympian boxer in the first competition day, Iran’s Daniyal Shakhbakhsh but he managed to win their contest at the featherweight (57kg).

Serik Temirzhanov was a Tokyo Olympian and the 26-year-old Pavlodar-based boxer moved down to the lightweight (60kg) for this Elorda Cup. He followed his coach, Mr. Azamat Makazhanov’s instructions and his tactics paid off against Chingiz Mussinov, another Kazakh hopeful of this weight class.

Kazakhstan’s Nurbek Mursal was a silver medallist at the 2022 Youth World Boxing Championships in La Nucia and this is his debut among the elite boxers. He had a height advantage against Tajikistan’s Jonmukhammad Sherov and he knocked out his opponent in the third round of their meeting.

Kazakhstan’s next ace, Aslanbek Shymbergenov is also World Champion in his weight class as Makhmud Sabyrkhan. The 31-year-old light middleweight (71kg) boxer returned to the ring after two months and he dominated all of the three rounds against Kyrgyzstan’s Zharkynbek Zhakypbek Uulu today.

Kamshybek Kunkabayev, Kazakhstan’s silver boy at the super heavyweight (+92kg), controlled the first round against Kyrgyzstan’s Bektur Alimbek Uulu and he had the advantage on the scorecards. The 34-year-old veteran felt that he can finish the bout and his punches were decisive in the second round in Astana. China sent their best female boxers to the Elorda Cup and their first star, the Asian Games winner Wu Yu eliminated a local girl, Aiym Zhumabay at the light flyweight (50kg). Her teammate, the former Youth Olympic Games winner Chang Yuan was too experienced for India’s Sonia at the women’s bantamweight (54kg).
