Ramisha Shrestha delivered the main surprise in the semi-finals of the Nepal Prakash Dahal Memorial Tournament
There were several surprises at the Prakash Dahal Memorial Championships which is running in their capital city in Kathmandu where 23 champions will be crowned. Ramisha Shrestha delivered the main upset of the competition, she bowed out Nepal’s ASBC Asian U22 medallist Susma Tamang in the semi-finals.
Altogether 75 women and 150 men boxers are participating in the new edition of the Prakash Dahal Memorial Championships. Twenty-one teams entered in the female part of the competition and among them the Tribhuvan Army Club is one of the strongest ones with several national team members in their line-ups.
Nepal’s top female boxer, Susma Tamang, their historic Asian U22 Championships silver medallist was the main favourite at the women’s minimumweight (48kg) in the Prakash Dahal Memorial Championships. She lost to Ramisha Shrestha in the semi-finals which was the main surprise of the entire competition in Kathmandu, following that Tamang won only one round in this bout. Ramisha Shrestha will now meet for the title Tribhuvan Army Club’s Aarti Bomjan in the next session.
Their next female ace, Anjani Teli has Indian roots but she represents Nepal in the international stage since 2022 when she joined their elite national team. The strong bantamweight (54kg) boxer, who reached the quarter-finals at the 2023 Women’s World Boxing Championships, defeated Bimala Thapa Magar, another experienced international boxer by unanimous decision in her meeting.
One of the next surprises was delivered by Laxman Rai at the men’s minimumweight (48kg) who eliminated a national team member, Rabin Thapa in Kathmandu. Thapa competed in the World Boxing Championships and several other international events but this time he failed to reach the title of the national challenge.
Chandra Bahadur Thapa represented Nepal in the World Olympic Boxing Qualifying Event and he dominated his bout against Funglang Kambang at the men’s flyweight (51kg). Another talented boxer in this weight class, Kamal Thapa Magar also advanced to the next stage of the Prakash Dahal Memorial.
Prem Chaudhary, one of the veterans in the national event, eliminated Pradip Maharjan at the men’s bantamweight (54kg) in Kathmandu. Tribhuvan Army Club’s Chaudhary has more than 15 years of experience in the sport and he used all of his routine and strength to control his bouts in the event.
