Philippines, Thailand and Vietnam shared the 13 gold medals in the boxing tournament of the Southeast Asian Games

The thirteen finals were held in the fifth and last competition day of the 30th edition of the Southeast Asian Games in Manila in the Philippines. The host country claimed finally seven titles, Thailand had five champions while Vietnam earned one gold medal in the boxing tournament of the Southeast Asian Games.
Philippines’ Josie Gabuco, Nesthy Petecio, Carlo Paalam, Rogen Ladon and Eumir Felix Marcial all claimed medals in AIBA World Boxing Championships as elite or youth in the recent five years and all achieved titles in the Southeast Asian Games. Among Thailand’s previous AIBA medallists Sudaporn Seesondee, Chatchai Decha Butdee and Wuttichai Masuk were also among the winners of the SEA Games.
The boxing tournament of the new edition of the Southeast Asian Games started on December 4 while the finals were taking place today. The Southeast Asian Games is a multisport event, holds every two years and in the region and several top boxers were in action including medallists from the recent Asian Games, World and Asian Championships.
Philippines’
AIBA Women’s World Champions as Josie Gabuco and Nesthy Petecio are on the top
of the
Philippines’ Jeju 2014 AIBA Women’s World Champion and
defending ASBC Asian Women’s Champion Josie Gabuco had hard road to the finals
of the light flyweight (48kg) in the SEA Games. She eliminated her main rival,
Thailand’s Chuthamat Raksat in the quarter-finals and continued her winning
path against Vietnam’s Trinh Thi Diem Kieu in the last four. The 32-year-old
Filipino proved her best performance in the title contest against Indonesia’s
Endang. Philippines’ another AIBA Women’s World Champion, Nesthy Petecio, who claimed
the title this October, dominated her featherweight (57kg) final against
Myanmar’s Nwe Ni Oo and claimed the next gold for the host country.
Vietnam’s
lone title in the SEA Games was achieved by Nguyen Thi Tam at the women’s
flyweight (51kg)
Vietnam’s Nguyen Thi Tam was ASBC Asian Champion in
2017 and claimed silver in the 2019 edition in Bangkok. The 25-year-old best
Vietnamese female boxer stopped Cambodia’s Nao Srey Pov in the semi-finals of
the women’s flyweight (51kg) in Manila. Nguyen knew she needs to keep the focus
until the final seconds in her title bout against Philippines’ Irish Magno who has
been involved to the national team in 2012. The final verdict was split
decision in the favour of Nguyen who achieved Vietnam’s lone title in the Games.
Thailand’s
two female gold medals were earned by Nilawan Techasuep and Sudaporn Seesondee

medallist Nilawan Techasuep had a tough semi-final fight against Philippines’ Aira
Villegas and she used her long distance well in the final against Vietnam’s Do
Nha Uyen. New Delhi 2018 AIBA Women’s World Boxing Championships silver
medallist Sudaporn Seesondee eliminated her main rival Vietnam’s ASBC Asian
Women’s Boxing Championships bronze medallist Ha Thi Linh already at the quarter-final
of the lightweight (60kg). The 29-year-old Seesondee had easier job in the
semi-finals against Cambodia’s Vy Srey Khouch and controlled her final over
Philippines’ Riza Pasuit in Manila.
Carlo
Paalam and Rogen Ladon became Philippines’ first male winners
Philippines’ AIBA Youth World Boxing Championships
bronze medallist Carlo Paalam eliminated Malaysia defending Southeast Asian
Games winner Muhamad Fuad Bin Mohamed Redzuan in the semi-finals and landed
clear punches also in the title bout. The 21-year-old Filipino met in the final
of the men’s light flyweight (49kg) with Indonesia’s Kornelis Kwangu Langu and
controlled most part of their bout. His teammate, Doha 2015 AIBA World Boxing
Championships bronze medallist and Jakarta 2018 Asian Games runner-up Rogen
Ladon worked well on feet to beat Thailand’s Ammarit Yaodam in the next final.
Thailand’s
veterans as Chatchai Decha Butdee and Wuttichai Masuk both earned gold medals
in the SEA Games

bronze medallist veteran Chatchai Decha Butdee eliminated his main rival
Philippines’ Ian Clark Bautista already in the semi-finals. The Thai
bantamweight (56kg) boxer dominated all of the rounds against Vietnam’s Nguyen
Van Duong in the final and won the Southeast Asian Games. Butdee’s teammate, Doha
2015 AIBA World Boxing Championships bronze medallist and Asian Games winner
Wuttichai Masuk won all of the rounds against Marjon Pianar of Philippines and
became the champion of the welterweight (69kg).
Philippines’
three further gold medals were taken by Suarez, Palicte and Marcial
Philippines’ Incheon 2014 Asian Games silver medallist Charly Suarez returned to the world of boxing after a short break and his comeback paid off in the final of the men’s lightweight (60kg) where he met with Thailand’s 19-year-old Khunatip Pidnuch. Philippines’ former ASBC Asian Youth Champion James Palicte claimed the next title for the host nation following his success over Vietnam’s veteran Nguyen Van Hai at the light welterweight (64kg). Philippines’ AIBA World Boxing Championships silver medallist Eumir Felix Marcial spent only 71 seconds in the ring when he knocked out Vietnam’s Nguyen Manh Cuong in the final of the middleweight (75kg).
