Peerapat Yeasungnoen is back on track, he is the host country’s first winner in the Bangkok Qualifier

The first preliminary day delivered great battles in the 2nd World Olympic Boxing Qualifying Event in Bangkok, Thailand where the host nation’s Peerapat Yeasungnoen began his campaign well enough.

Altogether 579 boxers from 133 countries are participating in the 2nd World Olympic Boxing Qualifying Event in Bangkok where the total number of the available quotas for the Paris 2024 Olympics is 51. The number of the coaches, officials and team delegations members is 610 in Thailand.

Thailand’s former Youth World bronze medallist Peerapat Yeasungnoen regained his place in the national team at the light middleweight (71kg) and he had to open his campaign already in the Round of 128 in Bangkok. The 24-year-old Thai outpointed Venezuela’s Juan Cedeno in all of the three rounds with good strategy and he will meet Cook Islands’ Tawhiri Toheriri-Hallett on Sunday.

Vietnam’s Nguyen Van Duong was their first male Olympian boxer in Tokyo after a long break and the 27-year-old featherweight (57kg) hopeful won his difficult opening bout in Bangkok. The Vietnamese spent the last period in Korat with direct preparation and he looked fresh against another Tokyo Olympian boxer, Jean Carlos Caicedo today.

Kyrgyzstan’s World Championships bronze medallist Munarbek Seyitbek Uulu is one of their best hopes to take a quota in Bangkok, the first for their country. The 28-year-old Kyrgyz used his longer reach and speed advantage against an Italian, Michele Baldassi who had a great junior and youth boxing career but Seyitbek Uulu’s routine and punctual single shots were make the difference today.

Iran’s Daniyal Shakhbakhsh is a Tokyo Olympian who is aiming for his nation’s first quota in the Bangkok last chance qualifier. The Iranian featherweight (57kg) boxer was not only technically better than Libya’s Ahmed Alkoum but he landed the stronger punches to reach the Round of 32 in Thailand’s capital.

Mongolia had to miss the 1st World Olympic Boxing Qualifying Event in Busto Arsizio but the country returned to the last event with almost full squad. Enkh-Amar Kharkhuu was Olympian in Rio de Janeiro but the 32-year-old boxer is still strong enough to beat most of his rivals. The Mongolian controlled his first challenge in Bangkok against Bolivia’s Adrien Davin Carrasco and he was another top featherweight (57kg) boxer in the day.

One of the top names of the entire competition, Philippines’ Tokyo Olympics silver medallist Carlo Paalam competes at the men’s featherweight (57kg) in Bangkok. The Filipino is a small boxer in this weight class but he had energetic attacks in his debuting contest against Greece’s Georgian-descent Aleksey Lagkazashvili therefore Paalam managed to reach the Round of 32 in Thailand’s capital.

Uzbekistan’s Asian Champion Navbakhor Khamidova spent the recent weeks to be in shape in her last option to qualify for Paris. The strong Uzbek welterweight (66kg) boxer faced Bulgaria’s veteran professional pugilist, Joana Nwamerue who does not have the experience in amateur boxing yet. The Uzbek moved forward and she had the focus until the very end of this fight to win her opener in Bangkok. Two Koreans made the show in the evening session of the first competition day, firstly O Tae Bom, the North Korean, had a tactical victory over Namibia’s Tryagain Morning Ndevelo. Following that, the South Korean newcomer, Kim Hyung Seung defeated a favourite opponent in the same featherweight (57kg), Great Britain’s lone Welsh boxer, the Commonwealth bronze medallist Owain Harris-Allan.
