Payla, Salcedo, Vasquez, Lofranco, Cubay and Gidor were the bests in the Mindanao Leg of the Philippine Batang Pinoy Championships

The Batang Pinoy National Championships is an important competition in the Philippines which supports their youngest generations to raise their number of bouts and experiences. The Mindanao Leg of the Batang Pinoy National Championships saw excellent actions and new future hopes in the event where Lady Jane Payla, Mary Grace Salcedo, Romeo Vasquez Jr., Angelou Lofranco, Jimler Cubay and Rhein Jhon Gidor were the bests.
The Association of Boxing Alliances in the Philippines has got many national and regional events every year and their Mindanao Leg was the first in the long line in 2019. ABAP, which the short name of the governing body of Philippines’ boxing, arranged qualification events before the main event of the Batang Pinoy National Championships. The island of Mindanao is a strong boxing region in the Philippines and many of their national team members started their career in those cities.
The junior girls could fight in three different weight classes in the event and the first title was achieved by a 15-year-old talent who repeated her last year’s performance. Cagayan de Oro’s Lady Jane Payla has got strong family connections to boxing and she impressed in the final of the junior pinweight (46kg) against Tagum City’s Rhea Mae Rentoria.
Shyna Jane Mantiza claimed the second gold medal in the junior level and celebrated her title at the light flyweight (48kg) following her success over Cagayan de Oro’s Mary Car Vicente. Mary Grace Salcedo has got excellent skills but in the final of the flyweight (50kg) she used her strength to beat Honey Mae Casiple.
The participants in the schoolboy age group had five weight classes from the 36kg up to the 44kg in the Mindanao Leg Qualifiers. The first title was claimed by Romeo Vasquez Jr. who controlled his final against Von Harold Almirante. Jerwin Cabalona spent less than one round in the ring and the referee stopped his final when he met with Davao City’s Nico Carlo Insigne. Micoh Cholo Alvarez (40kg), Aaron Dave Testa (42kg) and Jared Shem Revilo (44kg) claimed the further titles in the schoolboy age group.
Cagayan de Oro’s Angelou Lofranco is an experienced boxer who has done enough to beat Daryll Dave Lagazo in the first final among the junior boys which was decided only by split decision. His teammate Jhasli John Illudar controlled the rounds against Cristian Dave Presores and won the final in each scorecard.
Rhein Jhon Gidor impressed at the flyweight (50kg) and stopped Christian Jade De La Cruz in the final which was a clear dominancy. Jay Larie Lagazo also spent less than two rounds in the ring when the referee confirmed his RSC success over Lee Van Lyod Pilapil. The last title of the Mindanao Leg Qualifiers was taken by Jimler Cubay at the junior bantamweight (54kg) where he was too smart for Joseph Machuca.
