Munarbek Seyitbek Uulu put Kyrgyzstan back to the Olympic boxing map

Kyrgyzstan’s Munarbek Seyitbek Uulu is their first Olympian boxer since the 2016 edition when Erkin Adylbek Uulu earned a quota. The 2nd World Olympic Boxing Qualifying Event has finished in Bangkok with fantastic battles.

DPR Korea’s Kang Su Hyang is in shape in this Qualifier and she started better than Kazakhstan’s two-time World Champion Nazym Kyzaibay. The Kazakh moved forward without any stoppage but the North Korean counter-punches came with perfect timing which secured a lead to Kang after three minutes. Kyzaibay was more successful in the attacks in the second round and she could turn back the contest with her strength today which means the 31-year-old Kazakh qualified for her first Olympics.

India’s Jaismine Lamboriya moved back the featherweight (57kg) in the previous weeks and she used her distance effectively against Mali’s ex-French Marine Fatoumata Camara in the first round. The 22-year-old Indian followed the strict game plan and Jaismine proved that she is in top form in this Qualifier. The taller Jaismine won the battle of the southpaw boxers unanimously and she earned India’s next quota, their sixth in boxing.

Ireland and Australia qualified boxers in all of the six female weight categories for the Paris Olympics and China was planning to follow them in the evening session. Their featherweight (57kg) boxer, Xu Zichun was a hard target for Romania’s Claudia Nechita in the first round, she worked brilliantly from her distance. The 30-year-old Xu managed to win all of the three rounds and completed China’s impressive quota series in women’s boxing.

Kazakhstan focused to make this happen in the men’s part of boxing after six of their boxers qualified earlier than Bangkok. Their seventh national team member, the 22-year-old former Asian Youth Champion Mukhammedsabyr Bazarbay Uulu met Moldova’s Alexandru Paraschiv in a specific Box-off at the men’s light welterweight (63.5kg). The Kazakh was patient, he looked for the best angles to land his punches and he made their men’s team complete for the Olympics.

Vietnam had one quota in boxing before the 2nd World Olympic Boxing Qualifying Event and their Ha Thi Linh bagged their second in the Box-off of the women’s lightweight (60kg). She lost her semi-final to Sweden’s Agnes Alexiusson yesterday but the 31-year-old Vietnamese managed to beat another Northern European opponent, Finland’s Vilma Viitanen.

Kyrgyzstan’s Munarbek Seyitbek Uulu used a different strategy as in his previous contests, he moved forward against India’s Sachin Siwach today in their specific Box-off at the men’s featherweight (57kg). The historic World bronze medallist Kyrgyz was patient, he followed the well-built tactics in the second round and he had the 20:18 lead in four of the scorecards. Sachin was not able to renew in the third round and Munarbek Seyitbek Uulu became Kyrgyzstan’s first Olympian in boxing since 2016.

Jordan’s Hussein Iashaish lost his semi-final at the light heavyweight (80kg) but he was focused against Armenia’s Rafayel Hovhannisyan in the Box-off. The Asian Champion ruled the middle of the ring and he landed at least two-times more punches than his European silver medallist opponent. Iashaish was dominant in this Box-off and he qualified for his third Olympic Games after Rio de Janeiro and Tokyo.
