Fantastic 26 junior and 25 youth finals were held in the ASBC Asian Youth & Junior Boxing Championships in Dubai, United Arab Emirates which was the highlight of our continent in the recent weeks after the Tokyo Olympic Games.
The former President of Boxing Canada Mr. Pat Fiacco worked as Technical Delegate in several World Championships and other major competitions. He supported the success of many Asian Championships in the recent two and half years and Mr. Fiacco worked as Referees Evaluator and Observer in the recent ASBC Asian Youth & Junior Boxing Championships. The boxing official summarized his experiences about the Dubai event following his arrival back to Canada.
“It was not that difficult to reach Dubai from Canada but the flights were long from Regina to Toronto, then to Amsterdam and from there still seven hours until the UAE. I am used to the long flights. I had to get a Covid-19 test of course 72 hours before arriving in Dubai.
The Opening Ceremonies were fantastic. It seems to me that ASBC and United Arab Emirates Boxing Federation are always raising the bar when it comes to hosting international boxing tournaments. The athletes felt really special as they never participate in such an exciting atmosphere with the light shows, the entertainment, the music which are really professional.
The hotel was also first class, nobody has to leave the property and this reduces the risk of the Covid-19 infections. The amenities of the Le Meridien Hotel are fantastic with swimming pools, many restaurants, etc. The environment was fun, high energy, professional and intense all at the same time.
Considering this ASBC Asian Youth & Junior Boxing Championships was held during the pandemic, I thought the number of the participants was impressive in Dubai. I loved watching the expressions on the boxers’ face, especially when they won their contests. We have to remember that these competitors are still kids, and for them to achieve this level of competition is something for them to be proud of. Tears and joy and defeat always get to me.
The work of the Referees & Judges was very good in this event, and I believe every decision was the right one which is the most important things in a championship. I can describe the whole event that it was successful, Mr. Anas, Mr. Ali and the entire team deserve a gold medal. Hosting four events in one in the same time during the pandemic is remarkable and it was extraordinary.
For me the biggest strengths of the event were the volunteers, they were amazing contributing the success of these championships. Then the boxers, coaches, R&Js, ITOs and of course the LOC.
I was really impressed with high level of talent these boxers displayed in Dubai, both female and male. Their physical conditions and fitness level were amazing and their boxing skills also very high. The competitiveness for Iran, Iraq, Palestine and United Arab Emirates really increased in the past few years. They are now medalling and able to compete against the top boxing countries. I have seen the growth of these athletes so it was just a matter of time for them to shine.
Honestly, I think all of the boxers proved their bests in Dubai. They all left everything in the ring and that is so impressive. If the Asian boxers continue to do what they are doing, they will surely succeed. The only thing that they need to work on is skill, that’s it,” summarized his experiences Mr. Pat Fiacco of Canada following the event.
