Mr. John Waith – The Boxing Association of Sri Lanka arranged a wonderful Course with the Clifford Cup

The 94th edition of the Clifford Cup had a fantastic environment in the open area of the Sahas Uyana complex in the city of Kandy, Sri Lanka which was one of the last competitions in 2024. The 1-star Referee & Judge Course was led by Mr. John Waith of Wales before and during the competition.

The President of Sri Lanka Boxing Mr. Anuruddha Shanaka Bandara invited the Welsh official, Mr. John Waith to increase the level of their Referees & Judges. Mr. Waith was satisfied with the performance of the R&Js and also the level of this traditional boxing event.

The number of the participants were 140 among the youth and 115 in the elite part of the Clifford Cup including 75 women. The champions have been selected to the youth and elite national teams and many of them could have a great future in our sport.

“The Boxing Association of Sri Lanka arranged a wonderful Course and the Clifford Cup in the city of Kandy. The management of Sri Lanka Boxing was very hospitable and well organized, obviously one of the key factors of this was the Course.

The IBA Referee & Judge course was a success and I followed how the Referees & Judges performs their duty in the ring combined with their ability to judge a bout fairly and adhere to the IBA rules.

I was very impressed with the way the candidates were selected for this course, they had not only good skills but great enthusiasm as well. I was very pleased with the quality of the candidates they certainly did their homework prior to the course.

Through the Boxing Association of Sri Lanka, the candidates had to pass a series of practical and theoretical tests before being selected, and this was showed in their performance in Kandy.

As for the Clifford Boxing Cup, it was very well organized to the standard of any international tournaments that I have attended. The standard of boxing surprised me for such a small country, I think we will see a few stars from Sri Lanka to shine in the future competitions.

Their new Boxing President, Mr. Anuruddha Shanaka Bandara has made fantastic changes and investment into the future of Sri Lanka Boxing and he is so enthusiastic and a great Boxing Fan. I can see a great future ahead for them in the upcoming years,” said Mr. John Waith after the R&J Course and the Clifford Cup.
