More than 35 boxers returned to the national training program in Bhutan including Tashi Wangdi and Dorji Nima
Bhutan National Olympic Committee approved the re-start of the sport activities in the country after four months of break due to the Coronavirus crisis. Bhutan Boxing Federation arranged a national training camp for their best boxers and began the physical preparations for the forthcoming goals.
Mr. Trashe Phuntsho is the head coach of the national team who selected more than 35 top junior, youth and elite boxers to start the preparation for the upcoming possible international events. The boxers work in their national training camp in the capital city of the mountain kingdom and their top international athletes are also involved.
Bhutan’s best boxer Thailand Open International Boxing Tournament bronze medallist Tashi Wangdi moved up to the flyweight (52kg) and attended at the Asian & Oceanian Olympic Boxing Qualifying Event in Amman. Wangdi is also in the training camp besides to Dorji Nima who reached the Top8 in the Tashkent 2017 ASBC Asian Boxing Championships.
Bhutan Boxing Federation arranged one national event in 2020 before the Covid-19 pandemic which was hosted in a small town. Nineteen champions including nine girls celebrated their gold medals in the Bhutan Sub-Junior National Championships where six boxers defended their thrones including their best future hope Sonam Yoezer.
The second edition of the Bhutan Sub-Junior National Championships was held for their youngest talents to increase their experiences in competition environment. The Bhutan Boxing Federation had elite boxers in the recent years but following their long term programs the country’s management focuses to the younger age groups to find new talents.
Bhutan Boxing Federation launched its women boxing programs in 2016 and their best Tandin Lhamo attended already in several international tournaments including in the last edition of the ASBC Asian Elite Boxing Championships in 2019. Bhutan Boxing Federation started the female program from the grassroots and they have now sub-juniors and schoolgirls champions from the age of 8.
