Meredov, Imankuliyev and Berdibayev leads Turkmenistan’s boxing squads in the Asian Games
Turkmenistan will be sending seven men boxers to the boxing tournament of the upcoming Jakarta 2018 Asian Games. In spite of the fact their two stars as Nuryagdy Nuryagdyyev and Arslanbek Achilov are not able to compete in the Asian Games their team is enough strong to make surprises in Jakarta.
Turkmenistan achieved three bronze medals in the history of the Asian Games in boxing since 1994 when the country could join as independent nation to the multisport event. Turkmenistan’s boxing team attended at the Feliks Stamm Memorial Tournament in Poland, at the Republic of Kazakhstan President’s Cup in Astana with successes following their national selection events.
Turkmenistan hosted the 2017 edition of the Asian Indoor and Martial Arts Games in Ashgabat one year ago which was a great success for the Central Asian country. Their head coach is former Russian boxing star Mr. Aleksandr Lebziak who developed the technical and tactical skills of the Turkmen boxers in the recent one year which has already paid off in the Islamic Solidarity Games and in the Feliks Stamm Memorial Tournament.
Turkmenistan Boxing Federation with the active support of the Asian Boxing Confederation hosted an international training and sparring camp for the Asian nations in Ashgabat these on May 10-20. Turkmenistan Boxing Federation has got a new and strong management which is widen their focus to outside of the country and trying to increase their possibilities and results into a new level.
Jabar Meyleyev is a new face in the national team, the 22-year-old boxer joined to the travelling squad following his first national title at the light flyweight (49kg) this year. His teammate Zarip Jumayev is member of the squad since 2010 and Jakarta will be his third Asian Games during his career. The 26-year-old flyweight (52kg) boxer is the lone one in Turkmenistan who was able to beat a Cuban athlete.
Yakub Meredov claimed silver medal in the Baku 2017 Islamic Solidarity Games therefore the bantamweight (56kg) hope is among the podium hopefuls in Jakarta as well. Turkmenistan’s best weapon in the Asian Games could be Hursand Imankuliyev who won the Feliks Stamm Memorial Tournament in Poland this March where he defeated world class boxers from Russia and other top nations.
Muhammed Berdibayev claimed silver medal in the Shymkent 2013 ASBC Asian Confederation Junior Boxing Championships and bronze in the Pavlodar 2016 ASBC Asian Confederation Youth Boxing Championships. The 20-year-old talent will be making his debut among the elite boxers at the light welterweight (64kg) in Jakarta.
Timur Tajimov regained his place in the national team at the welterweight (69kg) following he was able to beat his main national rival Muhammetmyrat Sahedov. Turkmenistan’s middleweight (75kg) No.1 Nursahat Pazzyyev was bronze medallist in the Singapore 2010 Youth Olympic Games, qualified for the London 2012 Olympic Games and after a few years of break he returned to the world of boxing one and half year ago.
