Koeabanu impresses on Day 3, ASBC President Chunhajavira visits SEA Games

Indonesia’s young stalwart Dio Koebanu delivered the main sensation as Asian Boxing Confederation (ASBC) President Pichai Chunhavajira of Thailand paid a visit on the third day of competition in the 2023 Southeast Asian Games in Phnom Penh, Cambodia.
The 19-year-old Koebanu pulled off a major upset over the Philippines’ ASBC Asian elite bronze medalist Mark Lester Durens, taking a hard-fought 5-0 win to advance to the men’s minimumweight (48kg) semifinals.
Prior to the bouts, Mr. Chunhavajira led a ceremony in remembrance of the late ASBC Communication Director and Association of Boxing Alliances in the Philippines (ABAP) President Mr. Edgar Picson.
Thailand’s Natthapong Thuamcharoen trounced Malaysia’s Jackson Chambai, 5-0, and Vietnam’s Nguyen Linh Phung stopped Cambodia’s Oat Vichith in the opening round to secure a podium finish in minimumweight as well.
Tokyo Olympics silver finisher Carlo Paalam of the Philippines dominated Malaysia’s Daelonel McDelon Bong, 5-0, while former SEA Games champion Aldoms Suguro subdued Singapore’s Mohammed Hanurdeen Bin Hamid, 5-0, in the bantamweight (54kg) quarterfinals.
Another Tokyo Games silver winner and ex-world champion Nesthy Petecio of the Philippines won the lone female match on Day 3, stopping Laos’ Minavanh Oupaxa in the first round of their featherweight (57kg) bout.
Cambodia’s veteran Davit Touch knocked out Laos’ Thongninh Xayyaseng in the second round and arranged a semifinal contest against the Philippines’ Paul Julyfer Bascon, who beat Vietnam’s Vu Thanh Dat, 4-1, in men’s lightweight (60kg).
Thailand’s Asian Games bronze medallist Rujakran Juntrong mauled East Timor’s Elisio Raimundo Gaio, 5-0, while Malaysia’s Muhammad Ridzuan Bin Mohamed Johari tallied an RSC victory against Indonesia’s Rafael Masoara Fido as the two winners set up a final four faceoff in lightweight.
