Kazakhstan’s Aybek Oralbay made a great opener in his new weight class in Shymkent

Kazakhstan’s Paris Olympian and Asian Elite Champion Aybek Oralbay made a great opener in his new division at the super heavyweight (+92kg) in the 43rd edition of the Karakozy Abdaliyev Memorial Tournament in Shymkent, Kazakhstan on Day2.

The international competition is one of the preparation events for the upcoming ASBC Asian Elite Boxing Championships. The region’s biggest city in South Kazakhstan was the host of the 2013 edition of the ASBC Asian Junior Boxing Championships.

Mr. Karakozy Abdaliyev was a Kazakh-Soviet soldier who was awarded to the title of the Hero of the Soviet Union in 1943 due to his brave actions in World War II. He was born in Shymkent and the city is proud of his hero therefore the Shymkent Boxing Federation was named its international competition after him.

The lightweight (60kg) is not an Olympic category but it has fantastic names and boxers in the Abdaliyev Memorial Tournament in Shymkent. Aidyn Sikhymbayev is a promising boxer in this weight class from the host city but he was defeated by Turkestan region’s Nurislam Kaldybayev in the second competition day.

The Tokyo Olympian Serik Temirzhanov moved back to the lightweight (60kg) and he walked over to the next stage due his top Ukrainian opponent, Aider Abduraimov was not able to box against him. Further talents from Kazakhstan in this weight class such as Chingiz Mussinov and the ASBC Junior medallist Ruslan Kuzeubayev won their contests.

Biybars Zheksen has eight years of international experience despite his age of 23 and the ASBC Asian Youth Champion caused one of the highlights of the day in Shymkent. The Kazakh national team member not only dominated the first round with heavy punches and technical superiority but he knocked out Tajikistan’s Iskandarbek Rustamov in the second round of their lightweight (60kg) contest.

Mukhammedsabyr Bazarbay Uulu, another ASBC Asian Youth Champion from 2019, moved up to the welterweight (67kg) since the Paris Olympics. The 22-year-old boxer eliminated Aybek Tulegenov as first in Shymkent where the Asian Elite silver medallist Dulat Bekbauov and the Youth World runner-up Yelnur Suyunbay also advanced to the next stage.

Kazakhstan’s 19-year-old Nurbek Mursal was silver medallist at the 2022 Youth World Boxing Championships but he lost to Ukraine’s Elvin Aliyev in the first round of the welterweight (67kg). Mursal is a tall and technician boxer in this weight class but his Ukrainian opponent was overcoming his in terms of strength and punching power.

Another 19-year-old Kazakh, Bakhtiyar Anarbayev had an easier contest in the round of 16 at the welterweight (67kg) against Turkey’s Muhammed Bursa. The Youth World bronze medallist Dias Molzhigitov, Bakbergen Aliaskarov and the World Elite Championships quarter-finalist Nurkanat Raiys were the winners at the middleweight (75kg).

Ukraine’s duo, the Youth World Champion Mykyta Zasenok and the European Elite bronze medallist Ivan Sapun both defeated Kazakh opponents at the light heavyweight (80kg). The two-time Asian Youth Champion Temirlan Mukatayev (86kg), the Asian Games bronze medallist Sagyndyk Togambay (92kg) and the Asian Champion Aybek Oralbay (+92kg) all succeeded on Day2.
