Among the Asian National Federations, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, India, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Palestine and Bahrain sent teams to the Istanbul Bosphorus International Boxing Tournament. More than 30 nations are attending in the elite event which is another highlight in the month of March.
Kazakhstan’s AIBA Women’s World Champion Valentina Khalzova competes at the middleweight (75kg) in the Istanbul event but her original category is the welterweight (69kg). Khalzova returned to the competitions after two years of break in the end of 2019 and she trained also hard during the quarantine period. The 25-year-old Kazakh boxer proved impressive performance against Russia’s Youth Olympic Games winner and two-time AIBA Women’s Youth World Champion Anastasia Shamonova and controlled their semi-final. Khalzova will be meeting for the gold medal with another Russian boxer, Elena Gapeshina who eliminated Turkey’s Sennur Demir.
Kazakhstan’s Asian & Oceanian Olympic Boxing Qualifying Event competitor Angelina Lukas and India’s powerful Nikhat Zareen claimed bronze medals at the women’s flyweight (51kg). Kazakhstan’s lightweight (60kg) duo, Vladislava Kukhta and Rimma Volosenko achieved bronze medals in Istanbul following their narrow losses to Russian and Algerian star opponents on Day4.
Kyrgyzstan’s ASBC Asian Champion Azat Usenaliev is the most experienced boxer in the men’s flyweight (52kg) who won his fourth contests within four competition days. Following his tough battle against Turkey’s Tokyo Olympian Batuhan Ciftci, he met with Argentina’s Ramon Nicanor Quiroga in the semi-finals. Usenaliev used his speed well enough in the contest and his quick counter-attacks decided the semi-final which means he can box for the title with Azerbaijan’s Masud Yusifzada.
Kyrgyzstan’s Akylbek Esenbek Uulu joined to the national team only in 2019 but the featherweight (57kg) boxer proved amazing developments in comparison to his last international event. The 22-year-old boxer stopped Azerbaijan’s Umud Rustamov and following his next RSC success, he can box for the gold medal with Argentina’s Mirco Cuello. Kazakhstan’s ASBC Asian Youth Champion Darkhan Duisebay is also finalist in the event after beating Turkey’s Necat Ekinci in the semi-finals of the welterweight (69kg).
Kazakhstan sent four boxers to the heavyweight (91kg) and all of them advanced to the quarter-finals in Istanbul. Their two semi-finalists impressed once again which means Kazakhstan’s two prides can meet in the final of the weight class. Two-time ASBC Asian Youth Champion Sagyndyk Togambay eliminated Ukraine’s National Champion Serhii Horskov in the first semi-final of the heavyweight (91kg) which was followed his compatriot, Abzal Kuttybekov who bowed out Turkey’s Mucahit Ilyas.
